Following shows an alternate solution to transfer "itn" routes from an iPad/iPhone to the TomTom Rider 400.

Transferring routes from MyRoute on an iPad to the TomTom rider

I wanted to use my iPad Air 2 to create and modify routes using the “myroute-app WEB” and then transfer them to my TomTom Rider 400.  This can be done using the option to save to TomTom MyDrive… and it works … well at least most of the time… but it is not reliable.

However there is another big problem, in that TomTom MyDrive (Beta) can only handle GPX tracks… and GPX tracks are fixed and you cannot easily change something… like skipping the next route point… or avoiding around a road block.

I am told that Garmins allow this when using tracks… but the TomTom Rider 400 does not… or at least I haven’t figured out how to do it yet.  So I prefer to use ITN files.

So as MyDrive dows not support their own native file format... the question is how to get my ITN route to my TomTom Rider with my iPad.

Well, last year I bought a memory card reader specially made for iOS devices using a Lightning connector to be able to view and edit my GoPro pictures while on a trip.  This device allows you read out/edit the contents of a Micro SD Card on your iPad/iPhone using a free app called “iUSB Pro”.  The device I used (iDragon) sells for about €12 on Amazon.de but I suppose that other such devices supported by “iUSB Pro” will work too.  Of course you will then need a MicroSD Card that is compatible to your TomTom.

(PS: I used the same Micro SD Card that I used with my GoPro and it worked fine)

So below are the steps on how to transfer the “itn“ route from your iPad to TomTom from MyRouteApp via the “iUSB Pro App”

  • Create/modify or select an existing route on MyRoute App
  • Insert iDragon(SD Card Reader) with a MicroSD Card into the lightening connector of your iPhone/iPad.
  • Upon inserting the Micro Card Reader into the connector this will in Start iUSB
  • In MyRouteApp save your Route as  “.itn (route)"
  • When asked for a destination.. choose “iUSB”
  • Now go to the iUSB app. You will find your “itn” route under the iUSB App Tab
  • From here, select More and then Edit
  • Select the files to transfer to TomTom
  • Select Move -> Destination iUSB
  • Switch to iUSB window using the icon at the lower left and confirm that file is now in iUSB window.
    • At this point your route is on the MicroSD card.
  • Remove MicroSD Card and insert in TomTom.
  • A window on TomTom will come up saying that routes are available and ask if you want to import.
  • Select Yes, then choose files from a list to be imported…and import.
    • Please Note that files that you previously sent to the TomTom and are found on the internal memory card buffer will also be shown in the list.
  • The TomTom will tell you when the import is finished... and your route will be displayed in MyRoutes and ready to use.

Of course you can use this method to transfer gpx files... if you want... and I understand that the iUSB software and the iDragon work on Samsung devices too.

I hope you find this information helpful... and if you have any questions, then please feel free to ask.

Best Regards,

Tim
