Route Summary
That France is one of the most beautiful and best touring countries is beyond doubt. It offers an incredibly varied landscape with good roads and pleasant climate. It is not for nothing that you see so many motorcyclists there. My previous series of routes in France were based on the route descriptions from the Motortourgids France part 1 made by Bert Loorbach.
This route comes from Motortourgids France part 2 and the original name is "From Burgundy to the Rhone Valley; Route 3: Green route close to Lyon".
In Motorbike guide France part 2 a difference has been made between approach routes and trips in a certain area. The approach routes can also be used in combination with the routes from Motortourgids France part 1
The routes are sometimes slightly adjusted based on the tips that Bert Loorbach gives in his description, or because of a different place to spend the night, or to achieve the minimum length of 2 hours for the MRA Library. For each route there is a more detailed description in the review, including options to stay overnight or places of interest en route, which are also indicated with a POI and if possible with a short description
The route is made suitable for Garmin, TomTom, Harley-Davidson BoomBox 2019 and Navigation App, can be downloaded for free and without My-Route-app registration. To do this, first click on the 'Use route' button and then on 'Save as'.

RouteXpert Review
On the way from Burgundy to the Rhone Valley you will inevitably arrive at Lyon. Most of them take the boring A46 ring road or drive straight through the gray city with its many tunnels. But there are also other, better and nicer options and this is the third of four alternative routes that lead you around Lyon. Three routes are on the west side and one route runs between Clermont-Ferrand and Lyon where you can enjoy the beautiful plateau of the Velay. This is also very suitable if you come from western Burgundy. Then one along St. Étienne and the Col de Ia République, and one that stays reasonably close to Lyon ends up in Givors, which I describe in this review.
On the way to the South of France on the Autoroute de Soleil (A6 / N6), it may be that in the neighborhood of Mâcon you have completely had it with the highways, the busy traffic in combination with the narrow street in the towns and the gray colors.
The next "obstacle" is Lyon, another busy gray city. Fortunately, there are roads around this very busy city that bring a smile to your face, so this is an option to get around this city on beautiful roads through the green part of France. The original route as described in the Motorbike Guide 2 starts at Marcilly-d'Azergues, I have adjusted the route and it now starts in Mâcon.
Driving on the Autoroute de Soleil we take exit 29 (Moulins) at Mâcon and continue straight on at the roundabout (RP3) to follow the D169 towards Juliénas.
At Crêches-sur-Saône (RP5) we turn onto the D906 to drive further south.
The D906 "Route Nationale" is a fairly straight road to Villefranche-sur-Saône from where we take the D338. We follow this provincial road to Légny (RP10), where we turn left on the D385, after about 1½ km we turn right just before Chessy to follow the D19.
The D19 winds its way through the green countryside to L'Arbresle, we have to go through this town and then follow the D389 (D89) to Souzy (RP12) where we take the D489. This is also a beautiful two-lane road with many curves.
At Duerne we turn right and continue on the winding D34. This is the best part of the "detour". This road rises and falls through the surprisingly rural and hilly landscape below Lyon, also called "Les Monts du Lyonnais". We continue to Saint-Martin-en-Haut where we stop for lunch.
After lunch in Saint-Martin-en-Haut we continue on the D34 and D30, we start to descend again and we can enjoy beautiful panoramas. Via Mornant we go all the way into the Rhone valley to reach Gívors, the end point of this ride.
Gívors is located between different Nature Parks and is therefore a nice base or starting point to drive in this area or you can turn here on the A47 to drive further south.
This route is actually an option to bypass busy Lyon and therefore not really a tour ride but I still appreciate this with 3 *** stars because you will still enjoy the beautiful steering roads and the green hilly landscape.
