Hairpins, lots of them. Some are tight and on small roads. Typical alpine roads and views. The twisty nature of this route and the beautiful mountain landscapes earn this route 5***** stars.

RouteXpert Review
This route forms part of a 5 day tour from The Pyrenees to The Alps that I have named #AcrossFrance, this is Day 5. Links to Day 4 can be seen below this review and also links to the start and finish hotels for this day.Hairpins after hairpins, this route has now fewer than 120 of them! Yes, there are quicker and certainly more direct ways of travelling from Grenoble to Chambery but none of them will be as thrilling or have as many breathtaking views as this route does.
The route uses a mixture of roads from dual carriageways to small rural roads but all are a pleasure to drive on. The scenery is typically alpine with meadows, mountain peaks and dense woodland. You will pass through small towns and villages but most of the route will be ascending and descending on some 120 hairpin bends. The most spectacular being the Lacets de Montvernier having 17 tight turns.
The road was built to replace an ancient mule track and improve access to the villages. The route is a favourite for our two wheeled, lycra wearing, cycling cousins so keep an eye out for them.
Construction started in 1931. The first construction company soon abandoned the project, however, a second company finished the job in just 11 months between May 1932 and April 1933. 36 labourers did the work, entirely by hand, creating a jewel that has delighted users the world over ever since.
The route carries on climbing and twisting through more hairpins and up to the summit at Col de Chaussy, 1533m. I have suggested a lunch break at the restaurant there where there are some fine views to be had.
After lunch there are more hairpins and alpine views all the way to the hotel on the outskirts of Chambery.
This route is the final day of a tour from the Pyrenees to the Alps. It starts and finishes at iBis Budget Hotels, links to these are below this review.
