RouteXpert Review
Route 8 of the Southern Dozen; Vinegar PieThe Southern Dozen are twelve rides based in Johnson City that travel all around the region. Each one is an adventure in itself that will take you through winding curves, breath taking natural scenery, historic landmarks, local points of interest, and fun attractions. Whether you feel like exploring caves, seeing wolves, touring historic sites, leaning into heart-pounding curves or just taking in the views, you’ll find a ride that’s exactly what you’re looking for.
This ride, from Johnson City to Clinch Mountain, is as sweet as the “Vinegar Pie” at the Clinch Mountain Lookout Restaurant (RP13). It takes you through some of East Tennessee’s oldest communities, on the trails blazed by Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. Get a panoramic view of Cherokee Lake and the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. It’s truly a feast for the eyes!
The first stop is in Jonesborough (RP4), a great town to plan stop for sight-seeing and paying a visit to the Lollipop store and Chester Inn State Historic Site and Museum.
The next stop is at the Birthplace of Davey Crockett (RP7), an American folk hero, frontiersman, soldier, and politician.
The trip continues to Greenville where you can visit the Andrew Johnsons Homestead (RP9) and Cemetery (RP11). Across the street from the Homestead is a privately owned Car museum (RP10), which is a visit worth as well.
After another scenic ride we arrive at the lunch location the Clinch Mountain Lookout (RP18), famous for the Vinegar Pie. Enjoy the view from the restaurant and the Veterans Overlook (RP19) 300 yards down the road.
You continue the ride on Highway 11 and along the way you can plan a stop in Rogersville and Surgoinsville. In Kingston you can visit the Netherlands Inn (RP21), the inn hosted many famous persons including Presidents Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson and James K. Polk. The Inn is filled with museum furnishings that depict an intimate study of life in one of the South’s most important American frontier settlements. Behind the Inn is the Netherland Inn Log Cabin Children’s Museum and Schoolhouse, featuring children’s toys of the 18th and 19th centuries. Not original to the site, the cabin was moved from Daniel Boone’s Wilderness Trail in Virginia. Boone is believed to have lived in the cabin between 1773 and 1775.
In Kingston you can enjoy indoor and outdoor restaurant dining at Riverfront Seafood Company (RP22) on the river in Kingsport. The menu consists of many items; Seafood, Beef, Pork, Chicken, Pasta, Soups & Salads, and very yummy home-made desserts!
After dinner we ride back to Johnson City via the Warriors Path State Park where you will cross a beautiful bridge.
I rate this route with 4 stars, because of the nice scenic roads and interesting sight seeing spots.
