RouteXpert Review
Route 10 of the Southern Dozen; Howling Wolves Stars and HistoryThe Southern Dozen are twelve rides based in Johnson City that travel all around the region. Each one is an adventure in itself that will take you through winding curves, breath taking natural scenery, historic landmarks, local points of interest, and fun attractions. Whether you feel like exploring caves, seeing wolves, touring historic sites, leaning into heart-pounding curves or just taking in the views, you’ll find a ride that’s exactly what you’re looking for.
This is part 10 of the Southern Dozen and is originally a short ride of only 57 Miles to Bays Mountain Park. To make the ride a bit more interesting I added some nice scenic roads to replace the Highway sections, total trip is now 109 Miles. You’ll cross different rivers and some very beautiful bridges. Just a few twists of the throttle will take you to a land isolated from noise and urban life.
From Johnson City you’ll ride to Bristol (RP8), a nice town where you can plan a stop for some shopping and a cup of coffee. From Bristol we take the beautiful scenic Gate City Highway and Bristol Highway via Weber City into Kingsport.
In Kingsport you can visit the Netherland Inn Museum (RP16), that hosted many famous persons including Presidents Andrew Jackson, Andrew Johnson and James K. Polk. The Inn is filled with museum furnishings that depict an intimate study of life in one of the South’s most important American frontier settlements. Behind the Inn is the Netherland Inn Log Cabin Children’s Museum and Schoolhouse, featuring children’s toys of the 18th and 19th centuries. Not original to the site, the cabin was moved from Daniel Boone’s Wilderness Trail in Virginia. Boone is believed to have lived in the cabin between 1773 and 1775.
In Kingston you can enjoy indoor and outdoor restaurant dining at Riverfront Seafood Company (RP17) on the river in Kingsport. The menu consists of many items; Seafood, Beef, Pork, Chicken, Pasta, Soups & Salads, and very yummy home-made desserts!
Next stop is Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium (RP19) located in beautiful Kingsport, is a 3,500 acre nature preserve and the largest city owned park in the state of Tennessee, which is known for its noisiest inhabitants: the wolves. A park where deer, wild turkeys, and otters thrive alongside owls, beavers, and falcons. Plan a couple of hours to enjoy this park.
On your way back to Johnson City you can plan a stop at the Gray Fossil Site (RP21) for a prehistoric adventure and buy a gift or souvenir at the Gift Box (RP22).
I rate this route with 4 stars, because of the nice scenic roads and interesting sites to visit.
