RouteXpert Review
Poughkeepsie CircleThis day’s ride starts and ends in Poughkeepsie riding on both sides of the Hudson River.
Once across the river you enter the Catskill Mountain area. The back roads snake along through the forested surroundings as you pass through the Mohonk Preserve. The roads deliver one curve after another as you ride up and down the hilly region.
Crossing over the Ashokan Reservoir you head South through the Sundown Wild Forest stopping off to take some pictures of the Peekamoose Blue Hole WP25 and the Rondout Creek.
At Grahamsville head North again and travel through the Slide Mountain Wilderness. Continuing North and pass through Stony Clove Notch before turning onto Platt Clove road. This trip is season dependent as this twisty mountain is not open to vehicles all year round. But when it is open it is one of the must ride roads of the North East. Towards the end of the road stop to take a look at the carved eye that has been cut into the rock face. WP46
Head North up Route 32 and pass quiet little townships along the way. Turning East onto the 23 the 4 lanes of traffic are a stark contrast to the roads that you have been riding along.
Pass over the Hudson River for the second time of the day over the Rip Van Winkle Bridge before taking the 6G South. As the treeline break there are views across the Hudson to the Catskills on the horizon. As the trees close in again houses are sporadically placed along the side of the road.
These quiet back roads lead all the way South back to Poughkeepsie
New York State back road riding at its best 3 star day for the scenery alone
