Route Summary
This route describes one of the day trips of a motorcycle holiday in Luxembourg. It goes through the eastern part of Luxembourg and a part of Germany. Challenging hairpin bends and beautiful long winding roads alternate. You are guided along the banks of rivers, you pass beautiful castles and of course you also visit a number of beautiful old cities in Luxembourg.

Because of the great roads and bends for motorcyclists in this route I rate it with 5 stars.

Starting point and end point: Hösingen, Parc La Sapiniëre

RouteXpert Review
In this route you can also work on your cornering technique. This time it is the rivers that play a big role in the course of the ride. The old cities in Luxembourg and a number of historical aspects have a nice supporting role.

After the departure you will soon reach the Bassins Superieurs. This is one of the two water reservoirs for the Lohmühle Dam and is important for the supply of water for hydroelectric power stations in this dam. Park your bike in the parking lot and then you will have the opportunity to see this incredibly large body of water from above.
When you drive over the bridge over the river Our in Vianden, you will see on the left a bust of the famous French poet Victor Hugo. He lived in this city for a few months in 1871. In the absence of the mayor, Hugo single-handedly organized a human chain that helped extinguish a large fire in the thatched roofs of 12 houses in Vianden. The city was eternally grateful to him afterwards.
A little further on you pass the German border and you continue to follow it until Echternach. First along the Our which then turns into the Sûre or as they say in Germany the Sauer.
Via the bridge at Echternach you leave the German territory and drive back into Luxembourg. Directly after that is a parking lot that you can use for a cultural historical visit of the city center.
After the break you continue driving south. Lovely winding roads and beautiful hairpin bends await you.
Then the tourist town of Larochette appears and there is the opportunity to visit, among other things, the castle ruins of the same name. The oldest references to that castle date back to the eleventh century when the lords of Larochette, the standard bearers of the counts of Luxembourg, lived there.
You are now following the river Ernz Blanche until you reach the city of Diekirch. This city is known for the beer brand of the same name but you will also find the national museum of military history there.
As you continue along the Sûre, you will come to Erpeldange. In that city you will also find the Château D'Erpeldange, which is set in a beautifully landscaped garden. Unfortunately, it can only be viewed from the outside, as the municipal administration is housed in this historic building.
Driving along the Sûre, you will come to Bourscheid Castle, which dates back to the year 1000. It is the largest and oldest castle in Luxembourg. For the first five hundred years, it was a significant castle. In 1512, the last lord of Bourscheid died. Through various owners and a French occupation in the 17th century, the castle's heyday came to an end. Since 1936, it has had the status of a national monument and since 1972 it has been the property of the Luxembourg state.
After Bourscheid, the route includes a so-called Point de Vue. At this viewpoint, you have a breathtaking view from the mountaintop over the valley with the river Sûre.
A little later, the river will come into view again and you will be presented with a number of beautiful hairpin bends.
When you get to the city limits of Dahl, there is a memorial chapel in honor of Saint Thérèse de Lisieux
As you head north, you will have some lovely bends ahead of you, which will take you to the Château de Clervaux. This castle dates back to the 12th century. It has had several owners, but eventually fell into disrepair. After being partially restored and used as a hotel, it was completely destroyed during the Second World War. It was completely rebuilt after the war and is now used by the local government and partly as a war museum.
You then head east again until you reach the Our. This river forms part of the border with Germany and you follow its banks towards the south.
The route includes a number of places for a drink and a bite to eat for yourself and your motorbike, are you obliged to stop here? No, of course you can also determine your own stops.
You end the route at the reception and enjoy a snack and a drink while reflecting on today's route.

About this region
Luxembourg ( (listen) LUK-səm-burg; Luxembourgish: Lëtzebuerg [ˈlətsəbuəɕ] (listen); French: Luxembourg; German: Luxemburg), officially the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is a landlocked country in Western Europe. It is bordered by Belgium to the west and north, Germany to the east, and France to the south. Its capital, Luxembourg City, is one of the four official capitals of the European Union (together with Brussels, Frankfurt, and Strasbourg) and the seat of the Court of Justice of the European Union, the highest judicial authority in the EU. Its culture, people, and languages are highly intertwined with its neighbors, making it a mixture of French and German cultures. Luxembourgish is the only national language of the country and is also considered to be the only language of the Luxembourgish people. However, in addition to Luxembourgish, both French and German are used in administrative and judicial matters, making all 3 of them the administrative languages of Luxembourg. With an area of 2,586 square kilometers (998 sq mi), it is one of the smallest sovereign states in Europe. In 2019, Luxembourg had a population of 626,108, which makes it one of the least-populous countries in Europe, but by far the one with the highest population growth rate. Foreigners account for nearly half of Luxembourg's population. As a representative democracy with a constitutional monarch, it is headed by Grand Duke Henri and is the world's only remaining sovereign grand duchy. Luxembourg is a developed country, with an advanced economy and one of the world's highest GDP (PPP) per capita. The City of Luxembourg, with its old quarters and fortifications, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 due to the exceptional preservation of the vast fortifications and the old city. The history of Luxembourg is considered to begin in 963, when count Siegfried acquired a rocky promontory and its Roman-era fortifications known as Lucilinburhuc, "little castle", and the surrounding area from the Imperial Abbey of St. Maximin in nearby Trier. Siegfried's descendants increased their territory through marriage, war and vassal relations. At the end of the 13th century, the counts of Luxembourg reigned over a considerable territory. In 1308, Count of Luxembourg Henry VII became King of the Germans and later Holy Roman Emperor. The House of Luxembourg produced four emperors during the High Middle Ages. In 1354, Charles IV elevated the county to the Duchy of Luxembourg. The duchy eventually became part of the Burgundian Circle and then one of the Seventeen Provinces of the Habsburg Netherlands.
Over the centuries, the City and Fortress of Luxembourg, of great strategic importance situated between the Kingdom of France and the Habsburg territories, was gradually built up to be one of the most reputed fortifications in Europe. After belonging to both the France of Louis XIV and the Austria of Maria Theresa, Luxembourg became part of the First French Republic and Empire under Napoleon. The present-day state of Luxembourg first emerged at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. The Grand Duchy, with its powerful fortress, became an independent state under the personal possession of William I of the Netherlands with a Prussian garrison to guard the city against another invasion from France. In 1839, following the turmoil of the Belgian Revolution, the purely French-speaking part of Luxembourg was ceded to Belgium and the Luxembourgish-speaking part (except the Arelerland, the area around Arlon) became what is the present state of Luxembourg.Luxembourg is a founding member of the European Union, OECD, United Nations, NATO, and Benelux. The city of Luxembourg, which is the country's capital and largest city, is the seat of several institutions and agencies of the EU. Luxembourg served on the United Nations Security Council for the years 2013 and 2014, which was a first in the country's history. As of 2020, Luxembourg citizens had visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 187 countries and territories, ranking the Luxembourgish passport fifth in the world, tied with Denmark and Spain.
