Route Summary
This route goes from Riga, Latvia to Kuressaare on the island of Saaremaa, Estonia.
Latvia and Estonia are lesser known travel destinations.
This route gives a good impression of what these Baltic States have to offer.
This route, which I have given 4 stars, gives a nice impression of the coastal area of both countries. The route runs for the most part through sparsely populated areas with a characteristic nature for these coastal areas. The roads are generally well maintained.

RouteXpert Review
In a northern direction the route leaves Riga behind. The beautiful old city with iconic buildings makes way for a route through a landscape full of lakes and marshes. After about 30km the route runs right along the Gulf of Riga. In Saulkrasti the route turns right to the east. This avoids the major through roads. The next 120km goes through a very sparsely populated part of Latvia. Few buildings, many lakes and a lot of marsh.
Just before the border with Estonia there is a nice opportunity for the driver and his vehicle to refuel.

Estonia, officially the Republic of Estonia, is bordered by the Baltic Sea to the west, the Gulf of Finland to the north, Russia to the east, and Latvia to the south. The capital of Estonia is Tallinn, a city known for its well-preserved medieval Old Town and its modern digital infrastructure.
The country has a rich history and culture, with influences from both the Scandinavian and German Hanseatic cities. Estonia is also one of the most advanced digital societies in the world, with a wide range of e-services and a strong focus on technological innovation.

The next 180km also go through sparsely populated areas with lots of forest and the occasional swamp. Only near Virtsu, where the ferry is waiting, it gets a bit busier again.

On the other side, Muhu awaits. Muhu Island is connected by a fixed line to Saaremaa, the largest island in Estonia. Saaremaa is known for its natural beauty, with vast forests, picturesque coastlines and numerous lakes. The island is a popular destination for tourists looking for peace, nature and culture.
With a large arc along the northern side of Saaremaa, the route ends in Kuressaare.

Kuressaare, the capital of the Estonian island of Saaremaa, is a charming city with a rich history and vibrant culture. Situated on the southern coast of the island, Kuressaare is known for its well-preserved medieval castle, Kuressaare Bishop's Castle, which is one of the best-preserved castles in the Baltic States. The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1398 and has been an important symbol of the city ever since.
