03 Landhuizen en Kastelen tussen Havelte en Roden

These country houses and castles have been used as a framework to plot the beautiful routes, but the routes remain worthwhile even without visiting the described objects. But of course the route has added value if you get off here and there and take a walk. Not all manors and castles are open to visitors, but these can be spotted from the public road or their garden or park is open to visitors.
The route is mainly on country roads, the busier N-roads and urban areas are avoided as much as possible. The length of the routes has been kept below 175 km, partly because the average speed will not be that high on many 60 km of roads.
Almost every province has one or more routes, only in South Holland and the Flevopolders no routes have been set out because there were no country houses and castles there that were eligible for this tour due to their location.
Starting point: Restaurant De Nije, Havelte
End point: Museum Havezate Mensinge, Roden

Kasteel Coevorden
Overcinge is mentioned as early as 1313, but it is the Struuck family from Utrecht who built a modern country house on this spot in the seventeenth century. The first Struuck, the story goes, got into a fight with the Utrecht bishop and was more or less banished. A later Struuck became Schout (schulte) van Havelte. He had a long-running quarrel with a fellow villager over Overcinge's property and it was only after many lawsuits that it was decided in his favor. Overcinge then consisted of farms, which were demolished by his son Johan Struuck to make way for a new country house. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the house was the residence of the Drenthe Queen's Commissioner, until it became the property of the Volkshogeschool. Nowadays Overcinge is an event location.
After just 22 km you reach the second Landhuis, which is now used as a hotel-restaurant. De Havixhorst, Schiphorsterweg 36, 7966 AC De Schiphorst.
De Havixhorst is a manor, recognized in 1618, located on an estate. De Havixhorst is first mentioned in 1371. Until the 17th century, Havixhorst was in the possession of members of the Van den Clooster family. From the 15th century, the lords of Havixhorst owned the right of collation in the church of IJhorst. The Van den Clooster family also owned the manors Rheebruggen and Vledderinge. In 1580 the manor Batinge was also conquered by them, but had to be relinquished again. In the 17th century, de Havixhorst passed on to the Van Munster family. Due to financial problems Reinold van Munster had to renounce de Havixhorst in 1658 and exchanged his property with heir Ibinge in Echten from Johan de Vos van Steenwijk. The De Vos van Steenwijk family owned the manor for almost three hundred years, from 1658 to 1956. In 1956 Havixhorst passed on to two great-nieces, the ladies Van Mourik, who sold the Havixhorst in 1963, after which considerable repairs were carried out over the years and, for example, the coach house was completely rebuilt. During that period it has been used alternately as a retirement home, a holiday resort for young people, a reception center for Vietnamese refugees, and was eventually used as a hotel. In 1982, the Havixhorst was purchased by Het Drentse Landschap and its renovations and restoration continued. There is now also a sculpture garden on the estate.
After 72 km on the route you come to number three, another hotel, in the middle of Coevorden. Castle Coevorden, Castle 29, 7741 GC Coevorden.
The castle has a turbulent history. Because of its location in swamp areas on transit routes, especially those between the Hanseatic cities of Münster and Groningen, and because of the lucrative toll rights, the fortress was of great strategic importance. In 1938 the municipality of Coevorden bought the castle, after which the restoration started in 1968. During a restoration in 2010, the red paint was removed. Since 1965 the castle has the protected status of a national monument and is in use as a hotel.
The next country house is in the north of Drenthe, so the next 77 km is just to enjoy the landscape, everything passes by: meadowland, forests and heaths! Along the Noord Willemskanaal you will see Landgoed Bosch en Vaart on the other side of the canal. To visit it you have to deviate a bit from the route once you have crossed the canal!
The route ends 19 km further in Roden. Museum Havezate Mensinge Mensingheweg 7, 9301 KA Roden.
Mensinge is a manor (fortified house). The house, which was privately inhabited until 1985, can now be viewed as an antiquity room. A large forest, the Mensingebos, belongs to the manor.
For a long time, the Mensingebos was off limits. Now the Mensingebos is freely accessible and everyone can enjoy the most beautiful piece of nature that Roden has to offer.

Drenthe (Dutch: [ˈdrɛntə] (listen); German: Drenthe) is a province of the Netherlands located in the northeastern part of the country. It is bordered by Overijssel to the south, Friesland to the west, Groningen to the north, and the German state of Lower Saxony to the east. The 10 most beautiful car and motorcycle routes in the Netherlands
These 10 routes in the Netherlands have been carefully selected, checked and made equal for TomTom, Garmin and MyRoute-app Navigation by a MyRoute-app RouteXpert. The 10 most beautiful motorcycle and car routes in the Netherlands are always a snapshot, and a personal opinion of the reviewer. This does not alter the fact that every lover of beautiful roads and interesting sights will enjoy these routes.
The ten routes are spread over 10 provinces, we only skipped Flevoland and South Holland. Interesting routes can also be found in the MyRoute app RouteXpert library, but we still want to stick to the 10 most beautiful and not the 12 most beautiful.
Enjoy the many fortresses and castles that are included in the routes, such as Fort Veldhuis in North Holland. But also take a look at the route southeast of Nijmegen and visit the impressive Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial. The route 'Overijssel in bird's eye view' includes the oldest house in the Netherlands and the route along the IJssel is probably the most beautiful piece of asphalt in the Netherlands.
This way there is something for everyone in this route collection. If you do not agree with these 10 routes, please send us an e-mail, indicate which route(s) should be removed and which route you would like to see instead. Maybe your route will be included in this collection of the 10 most beautiful routes in the Netherlands!
