RouteXpert Review The habitability and quality of life in the Netherlands is largely determined by the protection of dunes and dikes and, not least, by water management. Water drainage is of vital importance. In addition to the natural discharge of excess water, since the early Middle Ages, pumping and pumping stations are indispensable. First simple instruments set in motion by humans, animals or wind; from around 1750 onwards more and more sophisticated mechanized and automated installations, large and small, of which around 4500 now work in our country.
This two-day route takes us along 9 Steam pumping stations that have the Status of National Monument, 7 are still operational if necessary (for example in the event of heavy rainfall). Details about the various pumping stations can be found on the site of the NGS; "Nederlandse Gemalen Stichting", unfortunately this site is written in Dutch.
Outside the pumping stations there are also museums and other places of interest en route. The route runs on provincial roads, country roads and beautiful winding dikes. You pass many lakes and you drive through the Polders, forests, meadows and nature reserves. You drive through 8 provinces.
Because of the length of the route it is split into 2 parts with an overnight stay at motorhome The Big Oaks near Meppel (RP27).
Along the way there is ample opportunity to stop for lunch or something to drink, in every village there is a cafe restaurant or snack bar.
Because of the beautiful roads, beautiful nature and the history of the pumping stations, this route is worth 4 stars.
