Route Summary
As the name suggests, a tour through the southern part of the Veluwe through Gelderland.

This is the 27th in a series of 43 Endangered ANWB routes. These were published in the Promotors between April 2015 and September 2016.

Starting point: Restaurant Planken Wambuis, Ede
End point: Shell Westend, Arnhem

I awarded this route with 3 ★★★ stars because the scenery and attractions are excellent, and the roads are very good. You ride through National Park De Hoge Veluwe, over the Ginkelse Heide and along impressive places such as Burgers' Zoo, the Open Air Museum and the Apeldoorns Kanaal. The mix of nature, culture and smooth asphalt makes this ride an absolute must.

RouteXpert Review
South Veluwe: that sounds like peace, space and genuine bends. This route combines the quiet beauty of the heath and forests with surprising stops full of culture and history. Every kilometre breathes freedom - from quiet country roads to views over vast nature reserves. This is not a route to rush. This is a route to experience.

You start at the atmospheric Restaurant Planken Wambuis in Ede, where you immediately notice that you are on the edge of something special. The Veluwe stretches out like a green blanket, ready to be discovered. You soon reach the Tour Info Point; Ginkelse Heide. Here, on this open plain, thousands of paratroopers landed in 1944. The history is tangible - just like the view, especially when the heather blooms purple. Via Otterlo you continue towards National Park De Hoge Veluwe, one of the Netherlands' most famous nature reserves. As a motorcyclist you ride along the border, but it is worth getting off once for the Kröller-Müller Museum or a walk among the wild animals. Then follows Hoenderloo, where the forest slowly opens up again to more buildings towards Beekbergen and Apeldoorn. Between Apeldoorn and Loenen the route winds along the Apeldoorns Kanaal, a historic waterway that is now an oasis for recreationists. Then it's time for a rest at the Tour Pauze Punt; De Groote Modderkolk. This is no ordinary stop: here you will find an organic care farm, tea room and farm shop, all in the middle of nature.
After the break, you will drive through the southern side of the Veluwezoom towards Dieren, Ellecom and Velp. You will partly follow the canal again and pick up the second Tour Info Point of the canal along the way - a nice way to complete the story. And the asphalt? Still wonderfully winding, with good grip and little traffic. Then Arnhem looms up, but before it gets busy, you stop at the Open Air Museum and Burgers' Zoo. Two attractions within a stone's throw of each other. Then you end at National Sports Centre Papendal, the sports heart of the Netherlands, where you will roll through modern sports history. The route ends at Shell Westend, a logical fuel and rest point just outside the city.

The Zuid Veluwe route is an ode to everything that makes motorcycling in the Netherlands beautiful: nature, history, bends and experience. You ride through forests where the sunlight falls playfully between the leaves, over heaths full of memories and along attractions that invite you to get off your bike. Ideal for a full day of touring - with the feeling that you have really been away for a while.
