Benavente to Gijon

Route Summary
This route goes through the western part of Spain from Benavente to Gijon. This is the third part of a 4-day tour from South to North Spain.
This route from Benavente in Castile and León to Gijon in Asturias is a route through the lesser known part of Spain. After a flat start, the route goes through several mountain ranges with the coastal Gijon as its final destination.
I gave this route 5 stars because the surroundings and nature seem to come from a picture book. The roads are well maintained and offer a lot of variety. This is a long route, an early start is recommended.
If the route takes longer than expected, there is a possibility to make up an hour towards Gijon.

RouteXpert Review
From Benavente the route heads north. After less than an hour of driving you can already see the mountains in front of you. In this first part of the route the terrain is still quite flat and not very challenging. When we have already reached 100km the terrain becomes more relief and we see the first of the many reservoirs along the route. A few kilometres further is Cafetería bar El Cruce, in this sparsely populated area perhaps the right place for that well-earned cup of coffee.

Embalse Barrios De Luna is one of those many reservoirs. The dam is a good place for a nice photo. After the reservoir come the first real climbing kilometers. Along this ancient road there are still a number of very old churches. A photo moment for some, for others a reason to stop and visit the church.
Bar Mesón El Escaño is the place for lunch after 175km of driving. A typical Spanish bar with dishes for a local price.

The next section is mainly characterized by the even higher mountains and a passage through San Isidro, a well-known ski area for this part of Spain. Time flies by on this route. Although it is barely 100 km after the lunch spot, it is time for the inner man. Bar Piloñeta in Villoria is very suitable for this. The next section of mountain roads presents itself quickly after this. Oviedo is the next large town on the route. If you want to skip Oviedo to gain some time, there is a route point before Oviedo where you can take the highway to Gijon.
Oviedo is a beautiful city in the north of Spain, located in the region of Asturias. It is known for its rich history, impressive architecture and vibrant culture. The Cathedral of San Salvador is worth a visit. This Gothic cathedral is one of the most iconic sights in Oviedo. It houses the famous Cámara Santa, a chapel with relics from the Middle Ages. Around the cathedral you will also find several convents, for example the nuns of the San Pelayo convent bake their famous cookies here, which can be bought in the adjacent shop. The old town is a pedestrian area. There are several parking garages nearby where you can park safely.

The last part of the route clearly goes towards the sea. Gijón and the Bay of Biscay are visible from a great distance. This is also an old mining area, the remains are visible in several places along the route. Once in Gijón, a city with a rich maritime history and a vibrant culture, a visit to the Playa de San Lorenzo and Climavilla, the oldest district of Gijón, is very worthwhile.

About this region
Asturias (, Spanish: [asˈtuɾjas]; Asturian: Asturies [asˈtuɾjes; -ɾjɪs]), officially the Principality of Asturias (Spanish: Principado de Asturias; Asturian: Principáu d'Asturies; Galician-Asturian: Principao d'Asturias), is an autonomous community in northwest Spain.
It is coextensive with the province of Asturias and contains some of the territory that was part of the larger Kingdom of Asturias in the Middle Ages. Divided into eight comarcas (counties), the autonomous community of Asturias is bordered by Cantabria to the east, by León (Castile and León) to the south, by Lugo (Galicia) to the west, and by the Cantabrian sea to the north.
Asturias is situated in a mountainous setting with vast greenery and lush vegetation, making it part of Green Spain. The region has a maritime climate. It receives plenty of annual rainfall and little sunshine by Spanish standards and has very moderated seasons, most often averaging in the lower 20s celsius. Heatwaves are rare due to mountains blocking southerly winds. Winters are very mild for the latitude, especially near sea level.
The most important cities are the communal capital, Oviedo, the seaport and largest city Gijón, and the industrial town of Avilés. Other municipalities in Asturias include Cangas de Onís, Cangas del Narcea, Gozón, Grado, Langreo, Llanera, Laviana, Lena, Llanes, Mieres, Siero, Valdés, Vegadeo and Villaviciosa (see also List of municipalities and comarcas in Asturias).
Asturias is also home of the Princess of Asturias Awards.

Three tours in and around Picos de Europa Northern Spain
The Picos de Europa is a mountainous area in northern Spain, next to the Basque Country. In the middle is the village of Posada de Valdeon, which cannot be reached by motorbike from the north: you have to drive around the Picos via Potes or Sames. We stayed overnight in Posada de Valdeon in Hostal Casa Abascal. A great hotel with breakfast option. You can eat in a restaurant in the village with usually a choice of two menus.

There are all kinds of nature reserves around the Picos. These three routes take you through some of them. There are gorges to see, viewpoints, reservoirs and you can walk more than fine. If you like walking, bring your walking shoes.

But we come to ride and it's going great. Excellent roads with the occasional piece of unpaved so that you do not have to detour far for another attraction. You can eat delicious food and the people are very nice and hospitable. And because the route to Lourdes goes above the Picos, there are also pilgrimage sites and very beautiful churches and monasteries. The most beautiful thing in this area is the nature: breathtakingly beautiful with wild animals, rugged mountains and wild rivers.

All in all, you can spend at least 4 days here if you take a day of rest or go for a walk.
