About DenmarkDenmark (Danish: Danmark) is a country in Scandinavia, in Northern Europe. Together with Greenland and the Faroe Islands, Denmark forms the Kingdom of Denmark (Danish: Kongeriget Danmark). It is the southernmost of the Nordic countries, situated south of Norway and southwest of Sweden, to which it is connected by the Øresund Bridge. Germany lies south of the country's only European land border. The country also borders the Baltic Sea and the North Sea.
The capital of Denmark is Copenhagen (Danish: København).
Denmark has a total area of 43,094 km², slightly larger than the Netherlands and almost one and a half times the size of Belgium. It consists mainly of a large part of the Jutland Peninsula and the three large islands of Funen, Zealand, and Lolland, which, together with numerous smaller islands, form the Danish archipelago. Of the nearly 5.9 million inhabitants (2020), the majority live in urban areas. The population density is 136.2/km² (2020).
Danish history has been significantly shaped by its strategic location between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, on the European mainland. From the 8th century onward, Danish Vikings raided Western Europe and northern and eastern England. A kingdom emerged on Danish territory that over the centuries encompassed parts of southern Sweden and northern Germany, as well as some overseas territories in the North Atlantic Ocean. The Kalmar Union united Denmark with Sweden and Norway in a personal union from 1397 until Sweden left the union in 1523. The union with Norway was dissolved in 1814, before and after which the Danish state also lost other territories (to Sweden, Germany, and Icelandic independence) and shrank to its current size. From the 20th century onward, a social-democratic welfare state based on the Scandinavian model was established, with which Denmark developed into a highly developed mixed economy. Denmark is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy; the head of state has been King Frederik X since 14 January 2024. The country has two national anthems: a civil anthem (Der er et yndigt land) and a royal anthem (Kong Kristian). Greenland and the Faroe Islands are part of the Kingdom of Denmark but are independent countries with their own governments.
Denmark is a member of the European Union, the Schengen Agreements, and the European Economic Area. It is outside the Eurozone; the currency is the Danish krone.
