The route runs through the forests of the Sallandse Heuvelrug towards Rijssen and Holten. A visit to the nature museum on the Holterberg is highly recommended. The views are fantastic and the roads and trails are great for cycling.
Given the beautiful nature reserve and the easily accessible roads, 5 stars is an excellent rating for this cycling tour.

The start of the route is between the school and the church and within a few minutes you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The route then goes through the hamlet of "de Helhuizen" towards the Holterberg.
After about 5 kilometers there is another possibility to visit a viewpoint with a beautiful view of the surroundings.
After about 10 kilometers you will be on top of the Holterberg, a great opportunity to visit the Holterberg Nature Museum, one of the oldest and most famous nature museums in the Netherlands.
The museum is renowned for its life-size dioramas, which take visitors from the Sallandse Heuvelrug to the Wadden Sea, the Veluwe and even to the Swiss Alps.
You will find one of the largest collections of European animal species with more than 1000 animals, from the largest songbird in the Netherlands to the only European monkey.
Of course you can see all the animals that occur in the vicinity of the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park.
But the collection goes much further. All mammals in Europe are represented. Also, the collection of birds is famous among enthusiasts.
Then it's time for lunch. A nice opportunity is diagonally opposite the museum: "Buitengewoon Holten".
The owners of Buitengewoon Holten do everything they can to give its visitors an indelible feeling. The food is fine and if you like miniature golf, it's all possible.
After lunch you can pick up the route again towards Rijssen. After about 1 kilometer you will pass a beautiful work of art. Artwork Het Bos offers you, between the tree crowns, a beautiful view over the enk. The work of art, which is inspired by curved branches, gracefully blends in with its surroundings and will soon provide a subdued sensation after the planting of woodland plants.
After first passing through a beautiful piece of nature over the Sallandse ridge, you will reach the edge of Rijssen after about 8 kilometers.
The Rijssens dialect is part of the Low Saxon language. This variant is called the Twents-Graafschaps.
The Rijssens has its own character and is therefore easy to recognize. Rijssens is spoken by all social strata of the Rijssen population, but there has been a decline in active use. Due to renewed interest in regional subjects, use among the Rijssen population is increasing again. This led, among other things, to Rijssen-Holten being the first Lower Saxon municipality to become officially bilingual in 2008. This is reflected, for example, in the bilingual counter policy at the town hall, and the possibility of having weddings take place in Rijssens.
While in many variations of Twente many words are very 'Dutchified', Rijssens still retains a unique character with many own words and a typical pronunciation. Rijssens has a number of sounds that Low Saxon does not possess.
The fact that Rijssen has a strong idiosyncratic character is evident from the fact that Rijssen is one of the few cities in the Netherlands to have its own national anthem, Mooi Riessen, which was written in Rijssens by JH Mekenkamp:
Between the heed and forest and field,
between the high and empty land,
woer 'n Oa so slowly, slowly crowns,
make a way to the north,
woer still zeent, the fennels
with the bolnpeeters in the ass,
where it is still full, full oldwàts,
does he know where that is or not,
Chorus: That's in Riessen, that old Riessen,
The most beautiful places in all of Twentelaan
in very great stean, I couldn't wean solid
mear Riessen, young joa, young joa, young joa,
that suits me so noa, so noa, so noa
that makes me look so whole and so fresh,
because 'r mear is one Riessen
because 'r mear is one Riessen.
From the edge of Rijssen, the route continues through the beautiful area "De Borkeld" in the direction of Holten.
Holten is a village in the Salland region and has been part of the Twente municipality of Rijssen-Holten in the Twente Region since 2001. Before that, Holten was an independent municipality. Holten had a population of 9,410 on January 1, 2021. Holten is located on the Holterberg at the southern end of the Sallandse Heuvelrug.
From Holten, again on the way back to the end of the route, there is still the possibility to visit and drink a cup of coffee at the Dondertman farm.
Stichting Kinderboerderij Dondertman has been a household name in the region for over 20 years, a paradise for a completely carefree day out for the whole family! Meet the cheerful goats, stubborn sheep and the sweet cow in the animal meadow and don't forget our cuddly house where you can pet the rabbits. Dondertman is known for its large animal kingdom! The large, well-arranged playground offers plenty of fun for children up to and including 8 years old. In our catering industry, everything is available; from coffee, soft drinks, ice cream, lunch or even delicious burgers with fries.
After this it is another 6 kilometers of cycling to be back in the village of Nieuw-Heeten.
I am convinced that you can enjoy this beautiful bike ride for a long time to come...

The 10 most beautiful car and motorcycle routes in the Netherlands
These 10 routes in the Netherlands have been carefully selected, checked and made equal for TomTom, Garmin and MyRoute-app Navigation by a MyRoute-app RouteXpert. The 10 most beautiful motorcycle and car routes in the Netherlands are always a snapshot, and a personal opinion of the reviewer. This does not alter the fact that every lover of beautiful roads and interesting sights will enjoy these routes.
The ten routes are spread over 10 provinces, we only skipped Flevoland and South Holland. Interesting routes can also be found in the MyRoute app RouteXpert library, but we still want to stick to the 10 most beautiful and not the 12 most beautiful.
Enjoy the many fortresses and castles that are included in the routes, such as Fort Veldhuis in North Holland. But also take a look at the route southeast of Nijmegen and visit the impressive Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial. The route 'Overijssel in bird's eye view' includes the oldest house in the Netherlands and the route along the IJssel is probably the most beautiful piece of asphalt in the Netherlands.
This way there is something for everyone in this route collection. If you do not agree with these 10 routes, please send us an e-mail, indicate which route(s) should be removed and which route you would like to see instead. Maybe your route will be included in this collection of the 10 most beautiful routes in the Netherlands!
