Day 5 we drive from Slovakia to Hungary. The drive is short but there is a lot to see along the way and there are some nice photo stops and sight seeing in Szentendre.

Just outside Bratislava is the Art Hotel Kaštie, a unique country house which has been transformed into a beautiful hotel in baroque aristocratic style with beautiful gardens. The hotel is located in the middle of a vast English park, just 20 km from the center of Bratislava, on the outskirts of Tomášov. If possible you can stop here briefly for some nice pictures

In the small village of Čakany we drive around a small square with a church for Archangel Michael and a Baroque mansion from the end of the 17th century, modified in 1712 and rebuilt in 1824. It was built by Archbishop Juraj Szelepchényi. Next to the country house, which now houses a children's home, was originally a smaller French park, which they declared a protected area. The garden is closed, not open to the public.
The mansion in Čakany, together with the church on the hill, belongs to the dominant architecture in the village. The architecture of the mansion is based on the strong tradition of fortified mansions of the Slovak Renaissance with corner bastions. A short stop to take some pictures here is well worth it.

The next (longer) stop is planned at the Water Mill with museum in Kolárovo, “Kolárovo Gútai Vizimalom”. You walk to the other side of the river via a beautiful fully wooden covered bridge, the longest in Europe. The entrance to the museum is only 1 euro. The Watermill and Watermill Museum is a nicely reconstructed floating watermill, the only one of its kind in Slovakia, which is anchored on the bank of the dead arm of the Little Danube. You can also have a drink in the small cafe here.

At the Marie Valerie Bridge, stop briefly to take pictures of this beautiful and more than 500 meters long bridge over the Danube, which connects the Slovak city of Štúrovo and the Hungarian city of Esztergom, in the middle of the bridge is the border between the two Nations. In Esztergom we stop for lunch. Esztergom is a town of 28,412 inhabitants in northern Hungary, located on the Danube and is one of the oldest towns in Hungary.
The city has a lot to offer and you can certainly enjoy all the beauty here for a few hours. You can have lunch in one of the many restaurants or even take a Lunch Cruise on the Danube.

In Visegrád visit the beautiful Visegrád Castle and Citadel, this is a fortress located in the Danube Bend, in the town of Visegrád. It stretches from the high cliff of the Visegrád Mountains to the banks of the Danube. It played an important representative role in the Middle Ages, as it was home to one of the richest palaces of the Hungarian kings, and its political and military significance was not negligible. The latter kept its role until the end of the 17th century. It consists of two parts: the lower castle and the “Fellegvá”, also called the citadel.
The Citadel to visit is not the first castle built here. The first castle was built on Sibrik Hill, on the foundations of a former Roman camp, and was destroyed during the Tartar invasion. Visegrád's double castle system was built around 1250-1260 by IV. King Bela and his wife, Queen Mary of Laszkaris, from the Queen's dowry. The castle consisted of fortress walls around the mountaintop, two towers and a residential palace. In later times, King Charles Robert, who placed the capital here, expanded the castle and the famous royal meeting of 1335 took place here. The castle was further modernized during the reign of Sigismund of Luxembourg, presumably when the so-called "ladies' house" was completed.

The Citadel was connected to the Lower Castle by a valley barrier, which ran all the way to the banks of the Danube and ended in a watchtower. The medieval road from Esztergom to Buda led through the valley walls, which was closed by the gate tower in the north and a gate in the south. During a visit to the citadel you can come across several interesting exhibitions:

• Panopticon (in memory of the royal assembly of Visegrád of 1335)
• Medieval weapon history exhibition
• Men's hunting in the Middle Ages
• Outdoor Medieval Ammunition Demonstration
So definitely worth a longer stop.

Nearby there is also a special restaurant that was built entirely of wood according to Imre Makovecz's plans. The interior can accommodate more than 100 guests at a time, while the terrace surrounding the building can accommodate another 120 guests, who can enjoy a beautiful panorama of the Börzsöny mountains. The restaurant is also a popular venue for weddings and corporate events. The kitchen offers homemade game dishes at reasonable prices. In fine weather, delicacies are prepared on charcoal grills.

At 25 kilometers from Budapest, the end point of this day, we stop in Szentendre, one of the most picturesque cities in Hungary. It is a picturesque artists' village with many museums, galleries, churches, medieval houses and shops. It is a charming and ancient town with many attractions.
You can walk through the winding streets in the baroque center and have a drink or eat in one of the many restaurants and cafes.

From Szentendre it is only a half hour drive to our end point, the Biker Camping in Budapest, where we spend the night. Plan one or two extra days to enjoy Budapest.
