On day 6 we stay in Hungary and drive from Budapest to Gyula. It's a short drive but along the way we have some nice places to stop to soak up the history of this beautiful country and the Silk Road.

The first stop is to photograph the Castle Pálóczy-Horváth-kastély in the village of Örkény. Built in 1893, this eclectic castle of baroque origin is now a cultural home and apartment and is not open to visitors, but from the car park you have a nice view of the castle and gardens. The L-shaped building on the ground floor has a mansard roof, accentuated by pilasters.

The construction of the castle marked a turning point in life in Örkény, when from 1888 the farmer István Pálóczy-Horváth took over the estate to build the castle. He built a brick-and-tile factory, farm and schools in the backcountry, then the Farmer's Training. With his help, the Reformed Church was also built in 1923-26.

After a little less than an hour's drive we arrive in Kecskemét, where we stop for a while to explore this beautiful city. Kecskemét was an important city on the Silk Road and is well worth a visit. In the past, this city grew into a customs office and marketplace. The city's active economic life and relatively dense population attracted more merchants, craftsmen and residents, including Jews who became an important part of the city. Park in the center at City Hall, from there you can see a lot on foot and also visit museums. There are also several cafes in the center to take a break.

One of Hungary's most imposing Wenckheim Palaces is in Szabadkígyós, so a longer stop is planned here too. The palace is slightly off the route and can be reached from the car park after a short walk on a dirt path.

The main building is decorated with towers and a Renaissance-style terrace with a loggia. The 23-hectare palace garden has been a protected area since 1954, one of the best-known sites of the Körös-Maros National Park. In front of the stately house is a baroque garden, made of carved box and yew trees with a fountain in the middle. The romantic English landscape garden surrounding the building attracts visitors to stroll around the man-made pond and over the bridges. The park has the oldest and largest plane tree in the province.

After this stop it is another half hour drive to the terminus of Gyula, a beautiful city with many attractions such as Gyula Castle.

Agyula Castle offers its visitors 24 exhibition rooms: on the ground floor are the castle prison, the food shop, the bakery, the forge and pottery, the wine gallery and the chapel. Upstairs are the suites for the lord and mistresses, the castle office, the sandwich room, the armory, the halberd room and the knight's hall.

The castle museum shows how the lord of the castle and the castle mistress lived, how the office spaces were furnished, or with which weapons they fought in the past centuries. The castle's rededicated chapel is open for baptisms and weddings, while the knight's hall is also suitable for receptions and conferences.

We spend the night at Márk Camping which is within walking distance of the castle. There are also several good hotels in Gyula.
