RouteXpert Review
You depart from your stay in Montespertoli. The route ignores the major lanes and you drive along the smaller, narrower roads. That way you can also enjoy the beautiful surroundings along the way. The road passes Gigliola and San Donato in Poggio. In Castellina in Chianti visit the Tumulo di Montecalvario.Tumulus de Montecalvario is an Etruscan burial mound located near Castellina in Chianti. This name was given to him because of its location at the last station of a Way of the Cross. It has a circular diameter of about 53 meters, consisting of four tombs, with main room and lateral cells, with the entrance facing the four cardinal directions.
In Siena we park on the outskirts of the city.
It is interesting to buy a Siena pass. You can buy this online. It remains valid for 3 days. This allows you to visit the following monuments: cathedral, Piccolomini library, baptistery, crypt, opera museum, oratory of San Bernardini.
The centrally located Piazza del Campo - This large, circular square might as well have been shaped like a heart, as it kind of is, the heart of Siena. The Palio has been taking place here since 1287. A spectacular horse race between the seventeen city districts. Every year on July 2 and August 16, ten participants from these districts compete against each other, it is the event of this city. In Italy, for example, they even have the saying: “Chi dice Siena, dice Palio”, which they use when two things are inseparably linked. From this square you can walk into the numerous streets for shopping, eating, drinking or to see other sights. As I said, it is the beating heart of this vibrant city.
You will find the Palazzo Pubblico on the round square. This town hall, built between 1297 and 1310, has a very recognizable appearance. It can be recognized by the beautiful, light natural stone at the bottom with stately orange-pink bricks above. The 102-meter-high stone bell tower, Torre del Mangia, is also clearly visible from the square. This tower can be climbed and as you can probably imagine, the phenomenal view is more than worth the steep climb. In the museum, which is located in the old town hall, you can admire beautiful paintings and frescoes, among other things.
The next stop has to be the Duomo di Siena. From the outside, this duomo immediately catches the eye, with its breathtaking black and white striped marble it is a picture to see. Built in the 13th century, this cathedral was designed by the sculptor Giovanni di Agostino and is home to many cultural treasures that are definitely worth spending part of your day on. For example, in stained glass, life-size The Last Supper can be admired, there are 172 busts of Popes, which is quite impressive and there is a Pulpit from the year 1265-1268. In addition, this duomo also has a beautiful tower, which is 77 meters high and can also be climbed.
The Libreria Piccolomini was intended to house the library of Pope Pius II. The space was commissioned by Cardinal Piccolomini, who was later elected Pope III. The library was decorated with frescoes by Pinturicchio or Bernardino di Betto. A must-see during your visit are the hymnbooks from the 15th century which are beautifully illustrated full of miniatures.
The baptistery was built between 1317 and 1325. The facade is very special thanks to the many decorations on the white marble. Actually, it is more of a small church than a baptistery, because unlike other baptisteries that have a rather sober interior, you will be amazed. The frescoes on the vaults and walls are by Lorenzo di Pietro. The baptismal font is a true masterpiece with both Gothic and Renaissance style elements. Many famous artists contributed to this building.
Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana & Duomo Nuovo - Already in 1339, when the cathedral was far from being completed, the construction of a new cathedral, the duomo nuovo, started. That new building was never completed, only the right side nave with 3 high arcades and a high arch called 'il Facciatone' were finished. It is said to be the most valuable cathedral museum in existence. Here you can look at artwork treasures that were intended for the facade and interior of the new cathedral, such as sculptures, bronze objects, paintings, objects in gold, in terracotta, embroidery, etc.
The return trip to your residence is via Pogibonsi and Certaldo.
This ride gets 5 stars. The smaller and quiet roads to Siena are in very good condition. Some beautiful views during the ride on the characteristic landscape of Tuscany will take you to Siena. Siena has a wide range of attractions, all of which are well worth a visit.
