RouteXpert Review
The route runs south-west from the holiday home. You drive via Castelfiorentino. This town once served as a military base, mainly because of the equidistance of the town between the larger Renaissance cities of Pisa, Siena and Florence. The town was originally built on the famous Via Francigena pilgrimage route, to feed the many travelers and give them a place for the night. The town's original name was Castelvecchio, meaning 'old castle', because it grew on the plot of an old Roman castle called Timignano. This was a gigantic double-layered fort with five gates and a watchtower. Part of the ruins can still be viewed. Here you can fully enjoy the beautiful nature of Tuscany. Since you are driving back over the smaller tracks, you can easily stop for a while to enjoy all the beautiful things around you.
Despite the fact that the picturesque town of Pomarance is located in the 'Valley of Hell', it is one of the most beautiful places in Tuscany! The Valle del Diavolo got this name because of the geothermal activity that can be found here; the geysers and boric acid give off thick steam and gases to the air due to the volcanic activity beneath the tectonic plate.
San Gimignano is a medieval walled town. San Gimignano is known for its fourteen towers that dominate the silhouette of the city. These were built by wealthy families between the 12th and 14th century. The towers served as a home and fortification, but mainly as a prestige object. At its height, the city had 72 towers. San Gimignano is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Tuscany, making it one of the busiest.
Certaldo consists of the more modern lower town and the higher situated medieval village (Alto).
To visit the old Certaldo it is best to park in the Piazza Boccaccio and take the funicolare up there. This little train / cable car takes you to Certaldo Alto in a few minutes. This historic part consists of a main street (Via Boccaccio) where various small shops and bars are located.
The main street leads to Palazzo Pretorio, a beautiful building with parts dating back to the 7th century. From this building, the city and its surroundings were governed.
You will also find the church Chiesa dei Santi Jacopo e Filippo, inside you will find beautiful frescoes.
This ride gets 4.5 stars. You drive on smaller lanes that are also quiet. That way you can easily stop for a while to enjoy all the wonderful things around you. You can visit any curiously beautiful towns. Culture and nature also go hand in hand here.
