RouteXpert Review
You leave at the holiday home in Montespertoli. The Geothermal Museum (Museo della Geotermia) (RP 6) is located in Larderello. It tells the history of the generation of this energy from underground heat sources. Interesting for those who want to know more about the origin of this area.
It is interesting to stop is Sasso Pisano (RP 8) for a walk (3.5 km) in the Geothermal Park. It offers a continuous variety of active events. You walk through landscapes that are constantly changing, with a thousand different colors and shapes, on often heated grounds, sometimes immersed in the steam and accompanied by the sound of gurgling water and the escape of gas.
About 20 kilometers further we arrive in the Parco naturalistico delle Biancane (RP 11). This protected natural park is not far from the village of Monterotondo Marittimo. A landscape that looks un-Italian but is really located in the middle of the Maremma, in the southwest of Tuscany. A spectacular and almost unearthly landscape. This is truly spectacular to visit.
It's a geothermal area. The heat from the core of the earth has reached the earth's surface here. This ensures that you will see plumes of steam with a temperature of about 100 ° C rising all over the landscape. This steam consists mainly of water vapor, combined with a multitude of gases, including hydrogen sulfide.
The Parco delle Biancane is one of the most beautiful places in Tuscany. Over the years, the hydrogen sulphide has caused the rocks to turn white in some places. Together with the steam, this creates an unearthly landscape.
In the beautiful Tuscan landscape are several modern and very large power plants. This part of Tuscany was one of the first places where geothermal energy was extracted on a large scale. In 1913 the first geothermal power plant was built at Larderello. Today, the plants supply energy to one million Italian households, in addition to the energy generated by fossil fuels.
The way back goes via Casole d'Elsa, San Gimignano and Certaldo.
The route gets 4.5 points. As everywhere in Tuscany, the roads are of very good quality. It is a quiet drive along winding roads. The landscape varies constantly. The special geothermal area that you will cross is worth experiencing.
