Route Summary
Umbria is a region with green, gently rolling hills, mainly covered with vineyards and olive groves, but there are also many fields of wheat, sugar beet, tobacco and sunflowers. The region is located in central Italy, in the valley of the river Tiber with the reservoir Lago di Corbara.
This region is also called the green heart of Italy, has a mild Mediterranean climate so that the summers are dry and sunny. Umbria is characterized by ancient walled hill towns with steep streets that bear witness to a rich cultural history. Be pleasantly surprised by this region, where culture and nature are in perfect balance.
No motorized traffic is allowed in the historic towns. It is best to park your motorcycle in the peripheral parking lot. We received the following tip from the police: if you do not park your motorcycle within the blue-lined parking spaces, you can park for free. At no parking lot was it a problem to place the motorcycle outside the blue markings.
The local roads are in bad condition. Different speed limits apply to this. This varies from 30 km/h to 70 km/h.

On this ride you can visit some fortresses (Montefiascone, Capodimonte, Cibottola) and the beautiful cathedral in Montefiascone. The town of Civita di Bagnoregio is seen as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy and is also located on this route. The winding roads through the beautiful nature give you a free feeling. Unfortunately, the secondary roads are not in the best condition. Still, this ride deserves 5 stars.

RouteXpert Review
The ride starts at the holiday home just outside Spina. The accommodation is located on the first floor where you have a beautiful view of the surroundings. There is a spacious parking lot at the house. You reach the house via a 500 m long gravel track that is easily accessible.
Attention: the first gas station is after about 70 km.
A winding road through the forest leads you to the Monte Peglia (837 m.) which is located on the territory of the municipality of San Venanzo. The mountain is recognizable from a distance due to the presence on the top of numerous antennas for radio, television (RAI) and telephone. In addition to the presence of fauna and flora, the nature reserve of Monte Peglia is also characterized by the presence of prehistoric fossils and by the three extinct volcanoes near the municipality of San Venanzo.
It now descends to Lago di Corbara. Corbara Lake is an artificial basin built in the 1960s and used as a hydroelectric power station on the Tiber River. The lake is characterized by its steep banks that extend into a deep and narrow natural gorge as far as Todi.

From here you enter a more open landscape ot Bagnoregio. You reach Civita di Bagnoregio by driving at the roundabout to the right of the old Porta Albana. You drive through this long street all the way to the end. In front of the Franciscan monastery, which has now become a bar, there is a small square with a few parking spaces. Before the end of the street there is also a parking lot on the right and behind the blank wall a motorcycle parking space. If you walk in the garden of the monastery at the back, you come to a panoramic point, where you can take the pictures with the most beautiful view. You can walk down a staircase to the access bridge of Civita.
The town of Civita di Bagnoregio is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The town is located on a plateau of tuff and protrudes above the plain. However, the rock on which the town is located is very soft and porous and therefore constantly crumbles, giving Civita the nickname La Città che Muore, the city that dies. As a result, the town has been included on the World Monuments Fund Watch List of the 100 most endangered monuments in the world, so visit the special town while you still can.

You drive towards the Lago di Bolsena to Montefiascone. Montefiascone is located high along Lake Bolsena. The main source of income is viticulture and tourism. It has a nice old center.
In the Pizzeria Roma La Rotella they serve super tasty and large pizzas. The service is smooth and the staff very friendly.
In the upper part of the town is the Rocca dei Papi from the 12th century. From there you have the most beautiful view of the lake. There is a pleasant park nearby. In clear weather you can even see as far as the coast. From afar you can see the large dome of the Cathedral of Santa Margherita. After St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and Florence Cathedral, this church has the third largest dome in Italy. Inside the church there is a statue of Santa Margherita by Arnolfio di Cambio and there is also a terracotta of a Madonna and Child by Della Robbia.

You also get a nice view point on the Lago di Bolsena from the Rocca Farnese in Capodimonte. Lago di Bolsena is the largest crater lake in Europe and one of the larger lakes in Italy.
With an area of 114 square kilometers and a circumference of 43 km, this volcanic lake is the largest in Lazio and the fifth in Italy. Lake Bolsena is the largest volcanic lake in Europe. The lake was formed about 370,000 years ago by the collapse of the volcano Monti Volsini. The support of the 'roof' of this volcano became so unstable that it collapsed and took on the shape of a bowl. In the lake are two small islands, Isola Martana and Isola Bisentina. These are formed by eruptions of the volcano below the water's surface.

The Farnese fortress is the symbol of Capodimonte, it is located at the highest point of the historic town. This fortress villa was inhabited by the noble Farnese family. The palace, also known as the Farnese Fortress, is surrounded by a lush garden with ornamental trees, hedges and flowerbeds in the 'Italian style'. It is currently privately owned, but part of the fortress can be visited on a guided tour. In addition, this majestic palace of inestimable historical and architectural value is linked to the personal history of Giulia Farnese, sister of Pope Paul III, who, according to many scholars, was born exactly in the rooms of this palace. The Farnese Fortress is a fairytale place, a dream castle but above all an important piece of indelible historical memory of the small village of Capodimonte.

The Cathedral in Acquapendente is a 10th-century Romanesque-style basilica, historically belonging to the Benedictine order. It is dedicated to the Holy Sepulchre because it contains a bloodstained stone that is said to come from the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. It has the dignity of a minor basilica. The basilica has three naves separated by pillars, with a raised transept and an apse, under which extends the 11th century Romanesque crypt, divided into thirty-four spans covered by cross vaults on twenty-four columns. In the crypt is the chapel with the relic of the Holy Sepulchre, a structure that reproduces in miniature the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. In the Middle Ages, the basilica was visited by pilgrims and crusaders. It has been given the title of cathedral since 1649 and has been embellished many times over the centuries.
You drive to the city center where you can enjoy a coffee or soft drink in Bar Natale.

After Aquapendente you leave the SR2. The road now meanders through the landscape where you can regularly enjoy some beautiful viewpoints.
At the roundabout at Panicale you leave the SR220 to refuel in Piegaro. This is the last gas station on your route.

Before you reach your final destination, you can turn right to the Castello di Cibottola Piegaro. The fortress is located at an altitude of 471 meters in the village of the same name Piegaro. You also get a truly breathtaking view of the surrounding areas.
The most impressive and characteristic symbol of the castle is the heptagonal tower. The construction of the castle, which is small in size, seems to date from 1330 according to legend. But according to other sources it could be earlier and date from the first half of the 9th century. In the Middle Ages, Cibottola Castle was much visited by important personalities in the army, but also by representatives of monastic and religious life, such as St. Francis of Assisi and St. Anthony of Padua. Inside the castle is the church of San Fortunato and once there was also an old hospital.
The complex is now in a state of neglect and is almost entirely privately owned. However, the door of the drawbridge, the entrance door and a large part of the walls with a corner tower are still clearly visible, and there is also an underground passage of 500 meters long.
You are now about 6 km away from the holiday home.

An epic tour down the west coast of Italy to Sicily
This tour of 11 routes has been designed to take you to many of the well known sites in Italy, it even includes some lesser known sites that I think you'll enjoy too.
When they can, the routes will take you as close as you can get to the sites, like the Leaning Tower of Pisa just 100 m from where you park, or the Ponte Vecchio bridge in Florence where you'll pass right by the end of it and one route takes you as far as you can go up the active volcano Mount Etna.
I said this is a tour of 11 routes and not 11 days because I think you should stop an extra night at one or two places to really enjoy everything that Italy has to offer. For instance; an extra night at La Spezia gives you the opportunity to visit the famous chain of five picturesque seaside fishing villages known as the Cinque Terre. An extra night at the volcanic crater lake - Lake Bracciano, will allow you to take a short train ride into the city Rome to see all of her sights. I'd like an extra night at Salerno to ride the Amalfi Coast road again and another at Cefalu on the island of Sicily to enjoy the spectacular coastline.
What better way to discover amazing Italy than on a road tour? With 80% of world heritage sites, an Italian road tour surely promises an experience worth living!
From a motorcyclist’s point of view, Italy is among the best places in the world to ride. Twisty roads, close distances between sea, hills and mountains – you only need to ride a few miles and the landscape changes completely. Excellent food, good weather and reasonable costs make Italy an attractive touring place for bikers. Reasonably priced hotels and B&Bs; have been used with links to these on each route review.

Route highlights:
Route 1: The Italian Riviera and Portofino.
Route 2: Pisa, Florence and Siena.
Route 3. Volcanic crater lakes and the Tuscany landscape.
Route 4. Twisty roads through the foothills of the Lepini mountains.
Route 5. The Amalfi Coast road.
Route 6. The equally spectacular Cilento Coast road.
Route 7. Tropea and the Coast of Gods.
Route 8. Climbing Mount Etna and the incredibly twisty road to Cefalu.
Route 9. Twisty roads and The Valley of the Temples.
Route 10. The pure white cliffs of Scala dei Turchi and the Selinunte Temples.
Route 11. The salt pans of Trapani and the Grotta Mangiapane.

The tour ends in the ferry port of Palermo where you have a choice to either take to the road to head off of the island at Messina or hop on a ferry. Ferry destinations from Palermo include Genoa in northern Italy, the Italian island of Sardinia where you can tour the island and hop on another ferry to France, or even take a ferry to Tunisia in North Africa. The choice is yours. I hope you have enjoyed this tour.
