This route was brought to you by:
RouteXpert Hans van de Ven (Mr.MRA)
Last edit: 22-03-2025
This is the 17th in a series of 43 Endangered ANWB routes. These were published in the Promotors between April 2015 and September 2016.
Tour Start Point: Snackbar Saantje
Tour End Point: De Doppe, Vollenhove
Suitable for motorcyclists of all levels, especially if you take the time to stop and enjoy. National Park Weerribben-Wieden forms the heart of this route, but the surrounding pearls complete it.
Tip: bring some change for the ferry (€2.40) and keep your camera handy – you won’t know where to look first.
I awarded this route 3 ★★★ stars because the roads are very good and both the scenery and the attractions are among the absolute top.

Olde Maten & Veerslootslanden
You start in the middle of Vollenhove at Snackbar Saantje. A simple, but popular place where you can quickly grab a snack or check your tires. You soon drive along country roads towards Blokzijl, with its cozy harbor and characteristic facades. Via Blankenham you head to Kuinre and the surrounding reed land: the domain of National Park De Weerribben. This Tour Info Point is one of the absolute highlights: swamp forests, quaking bogs and ditches as far as the eye can see. You meander further through Paasloo and IJsselham, where you are constantly surprised by the variety in landscape and road type. Quiet back roads, charming bridges and lots of greenery make this part wonderful to drive. Via Tuk and Steenwijk you reach Villa Rams Woerthe, a masterpiece in Art Nouveau. This impressive villa is no less than a small castle, and forms a beautiful setting for a short stop.
Then it's time for nature and water. You drive towards Giethoorn, but turn off to the Beulakerwijde, the largest lake in the region. An almost un-Dutch peace reigns here. Birdwatchers, canoeists and hikers appreciate this place - just like you on your motorbike. A little further on you will find your lunch spot: Ribhouse Big Texas, a true western walhalla in Wanneperveen. The smell of grilled meat, Texan decor and a hearty plate of spareribs await you.
With a full stomach you set course for Meppel and the Reestdal. Here you will find the Reestdal Lookout Tower, a photogenic Tour Photo Point. From the wooden tower you look out over an ancient stream valley that marks the provincial border between Drenthe and Overijssel. Your motorcycle ride continues along quiet farms and classic dike roads to Rouveen, where the bird-rich Olde Maten & Veerslootslanden are located - a hidden gem for nature lovers.
But the highlight comes at the end: you reach Genemuiden, where you take the ferry to Zwartsluis. This short crossing over the Zwarte Water is an experience in itself, complete with a view and a breath of fresh air. Once on the other side, you turn the last kilometers via Sint Jansklooster back to Vollenhove. You fill up at the Shell Randweg and eventually park at Café De Doppe, where you end the day with a drink and perhaps a chat with the locals.
The Noordwest Overijsselroute is a real surprise for every motorcyclist who likes variety. You ride over dikes, along lakes, through reed fields and villages where time seems to stand still. The roads are well maintained and varied - from winding asphalt to quiet country roads - and the nature is overwhelming. Combine that with culture, history, a ferry and good food, and you have a route that offers everything.

Flevoland
About this region
Flevoland (Dutch: [ˈfleːvoːlɑnt] (listen)) is the 12th and youngest province of the Netherlands, established in 1986, when the Southern and Eastern Flevopolders, together with the Noordoostpolder were merged into one provincial entity. It is in the centre of the country in the former Zuiderzee, which was turned into the freshwater IJsselmeer by the closure of the Afsluitdijk in 1932. Almost all of the land belonging to Flevoland was reclaimed in the 1950s and 1960s while splitting the Markermeer and Bordering lakes from the IJsselmeer. As to dry land, it is the smallest province of the Netherlands at 1,412 km2 (545 sq mi), but not gross land as that includes much of the waters of the fresh water lakes (meres) mentioned. The province has a population of 423,021 as of January 2020 and consists of six municipalities. Its capital is Lelystad and its most populous city is Almere.
Flevoland is bordered in the extreme north by Friesland, in the northeast by Overijssel, and in the northwest by the lakes Markermeer and IJsselmeer. In the southeast, the province borders on Gelderland, and in the southwest on Utrecht and North Holland.

The 10 most beautiful car and motorcycle routes in the Netherlands
These 10 routes in the Netherlands have been carefully selected, checked and made equal for TomTom, Garmin and MyRoute-app Navigation by a MyRoute-app RouteXpert. The 10 most beautiful motorcycle and car routes in the Netherlands are always a snapshot, and a personal opinion of the reviewer. This does not alter the fact that every lover of beautiful roads and interesting sights will enjoy these routes.
The ten routes are spread over 10 provinces, we only skipped Flevoland and South Holland. Interesting routes can also be found in the MyRoute app RouteXpert library, but we still want to stick to the 10 most beautiful and not the 12 most beautiful.
Enjoy the many fortresses and castles that are included in the routes, such as Fort Veldhuis in North Holland. But also take a look at the route southeast of Nijmegen and visit the impressive Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial. The route 'Overijssel in bird's eye view' includes the oldest house in the Netherlands and the route along the IJssel is probably the most beautiful piece of asphalt in the Netherlands.
This way there is something for everyone in this route collection. If you do not agree with these 10 routes, please send us an e-mail, indicate which route(s) should be removed and which route you would like to see instead. Maybe your route will be included in this collection of the 10 most beautiful routes in the Netherlands!
