RouteXpert Review
Linz is the capital of Upper Austria and an important industrial city. There are a number of interesting sights in the old center. The New Dom or Mariä-Empfängnis-Dom is Linz's cathedral. The neo-Gothic building dates back to the 19th century. The numerous stained-glass windows and the 135-meter-high tower are particularly striking. The Old Dom or Alter Dom can be found near the Hauptplatz, the central square of the city. This church has a particularly beautiful interior and is built in the style of the late Baroque. The Linzer Schloss from the 17th century is located on the banks of the Danube. Today the building houses the Oberösterreichische Landesmuseum. The state of Upper Austria, in German 'Oberösterreich', is located in the central north of Austria. Upper Austria covers the area between Czech Bohemia and the Alps of the Salzkammergut region. The capital Linz, the third largest city in Austria by population. Upper Austria is bordered to the north by neighboring countries Germany and the Czech Republic, to the east to the state of Lower Austria, to Styria to the south and to Salzburgerland to the west. The northeastern part of Upper Austria includes the foothills of the Bohemian Forest. Here you will find a rolling landscape with meadows, pine forests and granite rocks. To the south of this, the Danube flows into a low-lying valley. Larger cities such as Linz and Steyr are located in the Danube Valley. Nor further south you will find idyllic lakes and the snow-capped peaks of the Alps. This region is called Salzkammergut, and the description 'Austrian Lake District' is sometimes used jokingly.
This tour also includes a number of sights, such as a stop at Burgruine Reichenau, the castle was built around 1315 and has been owned by the Starhembergs since 1630. In 1750 the castle was converted into a palace, from 1930 it became a ruin, which was only badly renovated in the 1960s. The courtyard is now used as a venue for the "Reichenau Castle Festival". Then a forest walk in the Märchenwald. The legendary Thierberg forms the northern border for the fairytale forest hiking trail. This recreation forest is the ideal backdrop for the fairytale forest walking path. 13 fairy tales carved out of wood line the 2 km long path.
In the town of St. Veit, a stop is planned at Bäckerei / Cafe Hörschläger, after coffee the first encounter with the Danube, the Danube is, after the Volga, the longest river in Europe. The Danube is a rain river, which means that the river is fed by ground and rain water. The Danube originates in the Black Forest in Germany and flows eastward through Central and Southeastern Europe and empties into the Black Sea after 2,829 km. Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade lie on the Danube. In the town Kopfing im Innkreis, you can stop at Gasthof zur Post for lunch, park on the other side!
After lunch, meander further through the Donauvellei and cross the Danube again to arrive in Linz, where you will pass Tower 24, this was the orographic left end of the camp belt downstream to the Danube. The neighboring tower, Turm 25, was already on the other bank of the Danube. In September 1833 a first test occupation of the tower took place during a troop exercise. Just refuel and on to the hotel, where you end this 3-star rated route.
