I awarded this route with 3 ★★★ stars because the roads are very good, the landscape excellent and the attractions also excellent. Driving through the old Groningen countryside you experience peace, space and historical wealth. With fortresses, mills, vast salt marshes and the Wadden Sea this is a motorcycle ride that touches you. A wonderful tour for connoisseurs who love culture, nature and characteristic routes.
Since the early nineties of the previous century, ANWB/Promotor has been setting out the so-called Tank Bag Tours (TTT). You can imagine that the name stems from the GPS-free era, when motorcyclists still found their way on back roads with a road book in their tank bag or route roll.
These TTT are tours through the Netherlands with an occasional excursion to Belgium, Germany or even Luxembourg, which are held 6 to 7 times a year.
This TTT may differ slightly from the original.

Batterij Fiemel
Your motorbike is gleaming at Hotel Parkzicht in Veendam, the ideal starting point for this spring ride. After a cup of coffee, you head west along the Beneden Westerdiep, where the first quiet polder roads will get you in the mood. After a few kilometres, you reach the Tour Info Punt Dannemeer, a water-rich nature reserve that is perfect for a first short stop. The sea eagle watches high above your head – a sign that you are really riding in rugged nature. Via quiet roads, you meander to the Eemskanaal, where freight traffic and pleasure craft cross the quiet polder roads. After this, the charming Molen Fram awaits, an octagonal windmill that is still in operation. A beautiful photo opportunity and a reminder of the working-class past of this area. You meander further along the terp landscape towards Middelstum. Here it is time for a break at the Mendels Tea House and Bakery Museum, where home-made pastries and an authentic bakery interior welcome you. The tea garden is a nice place to take a breather. The route then takes you further north, along dikes, old farms and quiet villages. At Noordpolderzijl you reach the smallest seaport in the Netherlands. In 't Zielhoes, directly on the Wadden Sea, you can enjoy coffee and Groningen cake with a view of the endless mudflats. With the salty sea air still in your helmet, you continue to Battery Fiemel, a historic bunker domain from WWII. You can feel the history in the air as you drive between the bunkers and the wide views along the Dollard. Time to catch your breath at Steakhouse De Kleine Munt in Termunten. A warm place where large plates of meat and a heated terrace invite you for an extensive lunch break. After this stop, the ride continues along dikes and villages such as Spijk, Bierum and Holwierde. The atmosphere is intimate: old churches, narrow cobblestone roads and meadows as far as the eye can see. The Hogeland shows itself at its most beautiful here. After a fuel stop at Halma in Blijham – a simple but strategically located petrol station – you continue the last kilometres. Along farmlands and canals you approach the historical climax of the day: Fortress Bourtange. In this perfectly restored fortified town, once built to guard the border with Germany, you end your motorcycle tour in style. The atmosphere of Bourtange – complete with ramparts, moats and cannons – forms a worthy conclusion.
The TTT 2025-01 Spring Ride through Groningen is a tribute to the northern landscape: open, honest and breathtakingly beautiful. You will not only ride through space and silence, but also through centuries of history. The roads are perfect for relaxed touring and invite you to enjoy without haste. This route offers you a unique combination of nature, culture and pure riding pleasure. An absolute must for anyone who wants to feel the true character of Groningen – on two wheels.

The 10 most beautiful car and motorcycle routes in the Netherlands
These 10 routes in the Netherlands have been carefully selected, checked and made equal for TomTom, Garmin and MyRoute-app Navigation by a MyRoute-app RouteXpert. The 10 most beautiful motorcycle and car routes in the Netherlands are always a snapshot, and a personal opinion of the reviewer. This does not alter the fact that every lover of beautiful roads and interesting sights will enjoy these routes.
The ten routes are spread over 10 provinces, we only skipped Flevoland and South Holland. Interesting routes can also be found in the MyRoute app RouteXpert library, but we still want to stick to the 10 most beautiful and not the 12 most beautiful.
Enjoy the many fortresses and castles that are included in the routes, such as Fort Veldhuis in North Holland. But also take a look at the route southeast of Nijmegen and visit the impressive Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial. The route 'Overijssel in bird's eye view' includes the oldest house in the Netherlands and the route along the IJssel is probably the most beautiful piece of asphalt in the Netherlands.
This way there is something for everyone in this route collection. If you do not agree with these 10 routes, please send us an e-mail, indicate which route(s) should be removed and which route you would like to see instead. Maybe your route will be included in this collection of the 10 most beautiful routes in the Netherlands!
