Geierlay Suspension Bridge
RouteXpert Review
This absolute 5-star route takes you from Burgbrohl to the Geierlay suspension bridge via the most fantastic Eifel route, which fully emphasises the tourist character of the Eifel region.
This is not just a motorcycle route. This is a route where you can easily take your time to discover the region in a great way.

The route starts in Burgbrohl and first introduces you to the river of the Eifel, the Moselle.

The Moselle is a river that rises in the Vosges and flows through northeastern France and Luxembourg into western Germany. It is a left-bank tributary of the Rhine, which joins at Koblenz.

The name Moselle is derived from the Celtic name form, Mosela, via the Latin Mosella, a diminutive of Mosa, the Latin description of the Meuse, which used to flow parallel to the Moselle. The Mosella was thus the "Little Meuse" and its lower reaches wind and twist their way between Trier and Koblenz along one of the most beautiful river valleys in Germany, consisting of the Eifel and the Hunsrück. The river flows through an area that was cultivated by the Romans. Today the slopes are covered with terraced vineyards where "some of the best Rieslings grow".
Many castle ruins lie on the hilltops above wine villages and towns along the slopes.
There are many tourist villages along the river.

When the route crosses the Moselle it is only a stone's throw to that other, very famous river, the Rhine.

If you would like to take your time, you can take a chairlift just before the village of Boppard to the so-called 'Rheinblick', which gives you a magnificent view of the largest meander of the Rhine from above.
The chairlift ride takes about 20 minutes one way.

The route then briefly skirts the Rhine - the eastern border of the Eifel - before folding back into the Eifel Mountains and the Eifel forests. A pleasant ride brings you closer to the Geierlay suspension bridge, which is also a stop that is more than worth it.

The Geierlay is a suspension bridge in the Hunsrück low mountain range in western Germany. The bridge was opened in 2015. The span is 360 metres and the bridge is up to 100 metres above ground. On either side of the bridge are the villages of Mörsdorf and Sosberg. A stream called the Mörsdorfer Bach flows through the valley below the bridge.

The pedestrian bridge weighs 57 tons and can carry 50 tons. Twenty percent of all visitors to the bridge do not cross it. The bridge location is among the Top 100 sights in Germany.

Swiss engineer Hans Pfaffen designed the bridge with similarities to Nepalese suspension bridges and since 2017 the Geierlay is only the second longest suspension bridge in Germany.

Parking is best done at the visitor center because parking in the streets of the village is strictly prohibited. From the visitor center you can walk to the bridge in 20 minutes.

After the bridge (with or without a diaper) the route continues in the direction of Mayen where you can visit the Eifel Museum if you wish. This museum tells you everything about the history and the origins of the Eifel region.

Finally, on this route you will also pass Schloss Bürresheim, the famous castle from Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade, where Sean Connery was held captive in the role of Indiana Jones' father.

A pleasantly winding continuation of the route then takes you back to Burgbrohl, the start and end point of the route.
