RouteXpert Review
A round trip tour through the beautiful countryside of Andalucia starting from Cordoba in the heart of this region. The route visits several reservoirs and Andalusian villages, and a good proportion of this route travels through the Sierra de Hornachuelos Natural Park. The park is rich in flora and fauna, meadows of Holm and Cork oaks, as well as Gall and Andalusian oaks, and bushes of Lentisk, Kermes oaks and Strawberry trees characterise the area. Besides, the Sierra de Hornachuelos is considered to be one of the best-preserved Mediterranean forests in whole Europe. There are a lot of gravel trails within the park, and for the more enthusiastic rider with the correct tyres fitted, this area offers lots of trails to follow. This route only uses surfaced roads, although some sections are very bumpy - set your suspension to soft!
I have suggested a lunch stop at Constantina, there are several bars and cafes where you can get a meal or tapas. Game, such as venison or wild boar, and sausages made from them, are a speciality here.
Constantina is just inside the Sierra Norte de Sevilla Natural Park and has been an important town throughout history as can be seen by the ruined Moorish castle at RP 13.
On your tour, look out overhead as you may see short-toed eagles and griffon vultures, but there is also the endangered black vulture, imperial eagle and black stork. Other birds of prey include red kites, Bonelli's eagles and eagle owls, while in the woodland areas you may see azure-winged magpies, golden orioles and haw finches.
Wild boars are common, although not always visible since they tend to hide themselves in the most dense thickets; you're more likely to see deer.
This route passes the town of Hornachuelos where the park gets its name from and is worthy of a visit. From here, you can choose to take the A-3151 and then the A-431 for a fast route back to Cordoba or stay with this route for two more hours of twisty roads and beautiful scenery.
I have awarded this route with 4 stars**** The roads and scenery are very good and it has good attractions.
RP 9 Typical scenery and some road damage
RP 24 Great twisty roads
