RouteXpert Review
This journey from the heart of the Caucasus to the shores of the Black Sea is no ordinary journey; it is a journey through time, from the medieval isolation of Svaneti to the cosmopolitan energy of Batumi.

Mestia
The route begins in Mestia, the administrative and cultural center of Upper Svanetia. Mestia lies at an altitude of 1,500 meters and is dominated by the world-famous Svan towers. These defensive towers, dating from the 9th to the 12th century, served as both a residence and a fortress against invaders and avalanches.

along the Enguri
Leaving Mestia westward, you'll pass Lakhamula and Dizi. These are small, authentic communities where life is still closely linked to the seasons. In Lakhamula, you'll often find small churches with frescoes hidden among the houses. The road winds precariously along the deep gorges of the Enguri River, making for breathtaking photo stops at every turn. You'll follow the wild Patara Enguri River to the village of Khaishi. Khaishi is a strategic junction; it's the gateway that separates the highlands from the rest of the country. Here, nature becomes wilder and greener. One of the hidden gems along this route is the Delpak Waterfall. This waterfall plunges directly down the roadside and is an ideal spot to get out of the car and breathe in the fresh mountain air. The spray from the cascading water provides cooling relief even on hot summer days.

the Enguri Dam
Shortly afterward, you'll be confronted with a feat of human ingenuity. This is the Enguri Dam. At 271 meters high, it's one of the highest arch dams in the world. The enormous azure reservoir behind it stands out sharply against the gray rocks and green forests. Zeda Lia often offers the best viewpoint of the dam and its technical installations. It's a reminder of the Soviet era, when this massive project was built to supply all of Georgia with electricity.

Zugdidi (coffee break)
Once you finally leave the mountains behind, you enter the province of Samegrelo. The landscape flattens out and the temperature rises noticeably. You arrive in Zugdidi, the city of the Mingrelian nobility. The Dadiani Palace is the city's undisputed highlight. The Dadiani family was one of the most powerful noble families in Georgia. In the museum, you'll find one of Napoleon Bonaparte's three death masks, as well as the emperor's personal belongings, which came into the family through marriage. Adjacent to the palace is a botanical garden with centuries-old trees from around the world, an oasis of tranquility in the city.

Khobi
Next, you'll drive to Khobi. This town is known for the Khobi Monastery (Nojihevi). This 13th-century complex is renowned for its beautiful stone carvings and frescoes. Legend has it that important Christian relics, including the Virgin Mary's cloak, were once kept here.

Poti (lunch break)
The road leads to the coast and to Poti, an important port city with a rich history dating back to the Greek colony of Phasis. Poti lies on the edge of a wetland: Kolkheti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can take a boat trip on Lake Paliastomi and discover the unique flora and fauna of the wetlands.
A beautiful example of Neo-Byzantine architecture is the Poti Cathedral, modeled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

The tea hills
After Poti, you leave Samegrelo and enter Guria via Lanchkhuti, a region known for its humorous inhabitants and polyphonic singing. You continue to Ozurgeti, the capital of Guria. It was once the center of the Georgian tea industry. Although many plantations fell into decline after the Soviet era, there is now a revival of small-scale, high-quality tea production. Near Ozurgeti (near Gamziri), you'll find access roads to the Ureki coastal strip. This area is unique for its magnetic sandy beaches. The black sand is said to have healing properties for joint and heart problems.

the coastline
From the border of Guria, you enter the Autonomous Republic of Adjara. Your first major stop is Kobuleti. This seaside resort is known for its endless pebble beach and meter-long promenade. In contrast to the bustle of Batumi, here there's a more relaxed, nostalgic atmosphere. Just outside the city lie the Ispani Marshes, a unique peatland that acts like a sponge for the abundant rainwater in this region.
Before reaching Batumi, you'll pass Tsikhisdziri, home to the ruins of Petra Fortress. Built on a cliff overlooking the sea by the Byzantines in the 6th century, this fortress controlled vital trade routes between the Black Sea and the hinterland.

Batumi (final destination)
A 7-kilometer-long park along the seafront features modern artworks such as the moving statue of Ali and Nino, which symbolizes the tragic love between an Azerbaijani Muslim and a Georgian Christian princess. The botanical garden, located on the "Green Cape," offers an impressive collection of plants from nine different phytogeographic regions. The view from the cliffs over the Black Sea is unsurpassed. In the old town, you'll find beautiful architecture with Italian influences and the astronomical clock.

Georgia
Georgia is a destination that awakens the senses and nourishes the soul. Situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, this country offers a rare combination of unspoiled nature, deep spirituality, and a culinary tradition that elevates every meal to a ceremony.

Your adventure undoubtedly begins in Tbilisi, the vibrant capital where futuristic glass architecture stands side by side with the iconic wooden balconies of the old town. The city exudes an atmosphere of creativity and history, especially in the wine bars where the 8,000-year-old winemaking tradition is still very much alive. A short distance away lies Mtskheta, the spiritual epicenter of the country. As the ancient capital, it is home to a UNESCO World Heritage site that brings Georgia's early conversion to Christianity to life. For the true history buff, Dmanisi is an absolute must; it is here that the oldest human remains outside of Africa have been discovered, giving the region an almost mythical status as the "cradle of Europe."

Traveling west, you'll find Kutaisi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and the ideal base for exploring spectacular caves and monasteries. For those who want to fill their lungs with pure mountain air, Baryumi (Borjomi) is the perfect stop. This historic spa town, world-famous for its healing mineral waters, serves as a gateway to dense forests and vast national parks.

The true visual spectacle, however, lies in the Greater Caucasus. Kazbegi offers the country's most iconic image: the Gergeti Trinity Church, which stands out boldly against the mighty, snow-capped peak of Mount Kazbek. For an even more rugged and authentic adventure, head to Mestia in Svaneti. This area is known for its unique medieval defense towers and offers access to the region's highest glaciers.

In the south lies the surreal Vardzia, a vast cave city carved out of the rock in the 12th century. This labyrinth of passageways and chapels is an architectural marvel. However, if you're looking for modern relaxation, Batumi on the Black Sea coast is the place to be. This city combines a subtropical climate with bold skyscrapers and a vibrant coastal nightlife.

End your journey in the east, in romantic Sighnaghi. Perched on a hill in the Kakheti wine region, this fortified town overlooks the endless Alazani Valley. With its cobbled streets and abundance of wine cellars, it's the perfect place to raise a glass to a land where a guest is always considered "a gift from God."
