Route Summary
As the name suggests, a tour through Flevoland.

This is the 24th in a series of 43 Endangered ANWB routes. These were published in the Promotors between April 2015 and September 2016.

Starting point: Grand Café Espresso, Almere
End point: Restaurant De Kapitein, Almere

I awarded this route with 3 ★★★ stars because the roads are good, the landscape scores very well and the attractions are excellent. You drive through a unique part of the Netherlands, where the history of the country has literally been pulled out of the water. There are surprisingly many interesting stops between the neatly designed polders and lakes. Perfect for a relaxing motorcycle day full of variety and fresh views.

RouteXpert Review
New land under your wheels, literally. In Flevoland you will see how the Netherlands braved the sea and turned it into a new province. The route winds through open polder landscapes, past water-rich nature and modern city edges. Expect straight roads with surprising bends, wide dikes, and a few real 'wow moments'. Fancy fries from a farm or an airport as a viewpoint? You will not miss anything here.

You start at Grand Café Espresso in Almere, a stylish spot on the water to start your motorcycle ride with a fresh coffee and a view of the IJmeer. Then you ride towards the Gooimeer, a soothing peripheral lake that you can also smell with your helmet on: salty and fresh at the same time. Here you can catch your breath, with the water on the left and the young urban development of Almere on the right. The road leads you further over the Waddendreef and along the center of Almere-Stad. Just outside the city, the quiet country roads of the polder appear. You ride via the Paradijsvogelweg and Kievitsweg along vast meadows and neatly pulled fields - a dream for lovers of peace and quiet and a clear view. Yet the variety is well put together, because along the way you are given several viewpoints as a gift. At the Tour Info Punt Eemmeer, the landscape opens up again towards the water. Here, on the edge of the polder, you can see how air, water and land merge into each other. The Eemmeer is popular with sailors and windsurfers, but on a motorboat it is mainly a visual haven.
You turn to Zeewolde and arrive at the Tour Pauze Punt: De Frietboerderij. Crispy fries, a terrace with a view of the countryside, and a peace that you only find in the polder. Then you get the Vogelweg under your tires - a name that fits, because there is a good chance that you will see birds of prey circling above you. In Lelystad you step into another world for a while. First past Lelystad Airport, where you see the planes flying low. Then the Tour Info Punt RDW Testbaan - an area that is normally forbidden territory, but where you can feel the atmosphere: speed, technology and safety. Then follows a Tour Photo Point at the Midland Circuit, a well-known place for motorsport enthusiasts.
You refuel at the BP Larserdreef (Tour Fuel Point), before driving towards the natural spectacle of the day: the Oostvaardersplassen. This Natura 2000 area is perhaps the wildest part of the Netherlands that you can simply drive past on asphalt. Large grazers, water birds and expansive views give you the feeling that you have ended up in a miniature version of the Serengeti - but then with windmills on the horizon.
The route slowly closes back to Almere. The Oostvaardersdijk takes you back to civilization. And eventually you end up at Restaurant De Kapitein – a perfect ending by the water, where you can eat with a view of a harbor full of floating boats.

The Nieuwlandroute is a ride with character. You don't just ride over new ground, you also ride right through the story of the Netherlands and its battle against the water. Don't expect mountain passes or hairpin bends, but quiet country roads, lots of water, wide views and a surprising number of interesting stops. Ideal for a relaxed day of touring with plenty of opportunities to take a break and see sights. This route is recommended for riders who love space, air and a motorcycle ride full of Dutch pride.
