What makes this route unique? You're not just riding from A to B. You're following in the footsteps of our ancestors, right through the Drenthe landscape, which still exudes the tranquility and mystique of thousands of years ago. Every dolmen you encounter is a silent witness to a time when people created impressive structures with simple means. And you, as a modern traveler on two wheels, get to experience that heritage up close.
The route winds through authentic villages, along rolling heathlands, sandy roads, and shady forests. You'll feel the freedom of motorcycling, while constantly being surprised by a new dolmen—sometimes prominent in the landscape, sometimes hidden and mysterious. Each dolmen invites a short stop, a photo, a moment of wonder.
Along the way, you'll pass places where time seems to stand still. Think of Odoorn, Exloo, and Drouwen—villages with character, where you can stop for a cup of coffee or a hearty lunch. The route has been carefully designed to showcase not only the dolmens but also the most beautiful Drenthe has to offer.
After a day full of impressions, your ride ends at Hunebed D1, near Steenbergen. This was the first hunebed ever recorded, making it a symbolic endpoint of a journey through thousands of years of history. Here, you can dismount one last time and reflect on a ride you won't soon forget.
The route includes some sandy sections, but these are easily accessible, even after a day of rain. If you don't want to ride on sandy paths, you'll have to park your car or motorcycle and walk a bit.
Considering the beautiful dolmens, the varied landscape and the lovely roads you take, I rate this route with 4 stars.

Hunebed D16 Balloo
Hop on your motorbike and get ready for the first part of two unique rides through the heart of Drenthe. This carefully crafted route takes you past the first 27 dolmens, from the impressive Hunebedcentrum in Borger to the historic Hunebed D1 near Steenbergen. Along the way, you'll traverse a landscape where time seems to stand still, full of ancient villages, winding roads, and tranquil forests.
Starting point: The Hunebed Centre in Borger
Your journey begins in Borger, the "dolmen capital" of the Netherlands. Here you'll find the Dolmen Centre, a modern museum that transports you back to the time of the Funnel Beaker Culture—the first farmers in our country. You'll learn how they lived, worked, and buried their dead in the imposing stone burial chambers we now call dolmens. Just outside the centre lies the largest dolmen in the Netherlands: D27, with a length of almost 23 meters and 22 capstones. An impressive start to your journey.
Five dolmens you shouldn't miss:
D27 – Borger
Not only the largest, but also one of the best-preserved dolmens. The enormous stones were moved by hand, without machinery, and have been here for over 5,000 years. Its location next to the Dolmen Centre makes it a logical and impressive first stop.
D17 & D18 – Rolde
These two dolmens are picturesquely situated on the edge of the village of Rolde, overlooking the Gothic church. The combination of prehistoric and medieval architecture makes this place unique. Here, you can literally feel the layers of time.
D20 & D21 – Bronneger
Hidden in a wooded area near the village of Bronneger, these two dolmens lie in an almost magical setting. The trees filter the light, and the silence is palpable. A place where you can stop for a moment, take off your helmet, and soak up the atmosphere.
D49 – Papless Church
This dolmen near Schoonoord has a remarkable history: in the 16th century, Protestant church services were secretly held here. The name "Papeloze Kerk" (Papless Church) refers to this period. The dolmen has been partially reconstructed and is situated in an open field, easily accessible, and impressive in its simplicity.
D1 – Steenbergen
The end point of your route. D1 is the first dolmen ever recorded (in 1918) and is situated in a quiet, rural setting. It is smaller than D27, but holds a special symbolic significance as the final stop on your journey through prehistory.
Along the way, you'll pass through charming villages where time seems to have stood still. You'll pass through Exloo, among other places.
Exloo is a typical village with a typical es-shaped character, built on the higher sandy soil. The village boasts a charming village green, surrounded by old farmhouses and leafy trees. Here, you'll still find a working flock of sheep, which grazes the heath daily. The surrounding area is rich in hiking and cycling trails, and Exloo also offers a haven for motorcyclists, with charming terraces and an authentic atmosphere. The village exudes Drenthe tradition and is a wonderful place to stop for a ride and enjoy the tranquility.
Odoorn, situated on the Hondsrug, is a village steeped in history. The old church in the center dates back to the 12th century and provides a lovely setting for a short break. The village has a friendly atmosphere, with several fine restaurants and a peaceful village center. Several dolmens, including D32 and D33, are easily accessible in the surrounding area. Odoorn is a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Zweeloo is a picturesque village made famous by Vincent van Gogh, who painted the church here in 1883. The village has retained its charm: narrow streets, thatched farmhouses, and an intimate atmosphere. Zweeloo is nestled in a wooded area and is an ideal spot for a stroll or lunch. The nearby dolmen D43 is situated in a serene setting and is one of the most photogenic on the route.
Drouwen is a small village of great archaeological significance. It is located near the Hunebedcentrum (Municipal Dolmen Centre) and is home to several dolmens, including D19 and D20. The surrounding area, comprised of forests, heathland, and sand drifts, is popular with nature lovers. Drouwen has a peaceful atmosphere and is a pleasant place to take a break, for example at one of the local cafés or picnic areas. The village forms a pleasant transition between the bustle of Borger and the tranquility of the Drenthe countryside.
These villages add depth to your route. They're not just stopovers, but places where you can feel the Drenthe soul—peaceful, friendly, and steeped in history.
Have fun riding this route!

The 10 most beautiful car and motorcycle routes in the Netherlands
These 10 routes in the Netherlands have been carefully selected, checked and made equal for TomTom, Garmin and MyRoute-app Navigation by a MyRoute-app RouteXpert. The 10 most beautiful motorcycle and car routes in the Netherlands are always a snapshot, and a personal opinion of the reviewer. This does not alter the fact that every lover of beautiful roads and interesting sights will enjoy these routes.
The ten routes are spread over 10 provinces, we only skipped Flevoland and South Holland. Interesting routes can also be found in the MyRoute app RouteXpert library, but we still want to stick to the 10 most beautiful and not the 12 most beautiful.
Enjoy the many fortresses and castles that are included in the routes, such as Fort Veldhuis in North Holland. But also take a look at the route southeast of Nijmegen and visit the impressive Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial. The route 'Overijssel in bird's eye view' includes the oldest house in the Netherlands and the route along the IJssel is probably the most beautiful piece of asphalt in the Netherlands.
This way there is something for everyone in this route collection. If you do not agree with these 10 routes, please send us an e-mail, indicate which route(s) should be removed and which route you would like to see instead. Maybe your route will be included in this collection of the 10 most beautiful routes in the Netherlands!
