Breathe in the fresh air, feel the freedom and let Friesland surprise you. This route takes you along the vast Frisian lakes, picturesque villages and winding dikes. Perfect asphalt alternates with narrow country roads and bridges where you have to stop for a moment. The horizon is wide, the peace intense and the waterfront always close by. Get on and discover why this region is so popular with motorcyclists.
You start at Royaal Belegd in Sneek, a perfect place to start your ride relaxed with a good cup of coffee. Soon you leave the city and ride towards freedom. The first kilometers take you along small canals and green meadows towards Scharnegoutum and Goënga, where the typical Frisian farms welcome you. Via winding dikes you cross the region Súdwest-Fryslân. The road leads you to Tersoal and Raerd, where the winding roads and small bridges give you riding pleasure. Here the landscape is a mix of water and meadows, with the occasional church tower that protrudes above the horizon. Friesland at its best.
After a smooth passage through Irnsum and Akkrum, you drive towards Terherne, the famous 'Chameleon village'. Here you can feel the atmosphere of water life: boats bobbing in the harbour and in the background you see the Sneekermeer sparkling. A great place to take a short break. The route winds further through Terkaple, Joure and Haskerhorne. Here you experience the pure Friesland: quiet roads, reed beds and the smell of freshly mown grass. In Sint Nicolaasga you turn towards the southern part of the route. This is where the real 'lake experience' begins. You pass Wijckel, Balk and Harich, with views over the Slotermeer. The route brings you closer to the coastline and the water seems to be all around you. A real recommendation is a stop in Elahuizen or Heeg, where you can have lunch right on the water and watch the boats glide by. After a final stretch through the heart of the Frisian lake district, with beautiful vistas and perfect bends, you end up in Sneek at Royaal Belegd. An ideal place to talk about this wonderful ride.
The Frisian Lakes Route is a journey of discovery along waterways, open landscapes and quiet villages. With some 130 kilometres of perfect driving pleasure, this is a route that you can drive in all seasons. The roads are good, the traffic is quiet and the views are unparalleled.

The 10 most beautiful car and motorcycle routes in the Netherlands
These 10 routes in the Netherlands have been carefully selected, checked and made equal for TomTom, Garmin and MyRoute-app Navigation by a MyRoute-app RouteXpert. The 10 most beautiful motorcycle and car routes in the Netherlands are always a snapshot, and a personal opinion of the reviewer. This does not alter the fact that every lover of beautiful roads and interesting sights will enjoy these routes.
The ten routes are spread over 10 provinces, we only skipped Flevoland and South Holland. Interesting routes can also be found in the MyRoute app RouteXpert library, but we still want to stick to the 10 most beautiful and not the 12 most beautiful.
Enjoy the many fortresses and castles that are included in the routes, such as Fort Veldhuis in North Holland. But also take a look at the route southeast of Nijmegen and visit the impressive Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial. The route 'Overijssel in bird's eye view' includes the oldest house in the Netherlands and the route along the IJssel is probably the most beautiful piece of asphalt in the Netherlands.
This way there is something for everyone in this route collection. If you do not agree with these 10 routes, please send us an e-mail, indicate which route(s) should be removed and which route you would like to see instead. Maybe your route will be included in this collection of the 10 most beautiful routes in the Netherlands!
