Wadden and Marenroute – A voyage of discovery along the Groningen water
The Wad en Marenroute takes you along the rugged Wadden coast and through the characteristic Groningen landscape with its winding maars (old creeks and waterways). This is a route full of contrasts: from extensive dikes and salt marshes to picturesque villages with historic castles and mills. The route starts and ends in Winsum at Deelcafé De Buurvrouw, and takes you via Pieterburen, Warffum, Uithuizen and Middelstum along the most beautiful spots of North Groningen.
Along the way you can enjoy the wide views, the farmland and the history that is deeply rooted here. Hence the award of 3 stars.

Wad- en Maren
You start the route at Deelcafé De Buurvrouw in Winsum, a cozy place where the coffee is freshly brewed and you lay a good foundation for the day. From here you drive via quiet back roads to Eenrum and Pieterburen, where the seal center is a well-known attraction. The road winds towards Warffum, where you can make a stop at Molen Eva in Usquert. This historic corn and hulling mill from 1818 towers above the landscape and is still operational. After this photogenic stop you follow the route to Uithuizen, where you will find the impressive Menkemaborg. This beautiful 18th-century manor with its atmospheric rooms and gardens takes you back in time. A few kilometers further lies Uithuizermeeden, where the Rensumaborg welcomes you. Although this manor is not accessible, it is a beautiful historical landmark in the Groningen landscape. A little further on you can take a break at Snackbar Coralie, a cozy place for a quick bite or a cup of coffee.
After this stop, you continue towards Eemshaven, where the landscape changes. The horizon is filled with windmills and industry, but just when you think the charm of the Groningen countryside is disappearing, you turn towards Spijk and Bierum, where the peace and quiet of the countryside prevails again. Not much later you arrive at Molen Ceres in Spijk, an impressive smock mill that has been completely restored after a fire in 1998. This is a perfect place for a photo stop. The route takes you further to Middelstum, where you drive along the Boterdiep, one of the oldest waterways in Groningen. You slowly return to the starting point via the winding roads of the Groningen countryside. The route ends where you started, at Deelcafé De Buurvrouw in Winsum, where you can enjoy the ride with a good cup of coffee and freshly baked treats.
The Wad en Marenroute is a beautiful trip for those who love peace, space and history. The combination of Wadden coast, maren and centuries-old castles makes this a varied and unique trip. With approximately 85 kilometers of quiet inland roads and dikes, this route is perfect for a day of enjoying everything that North Groningen has to offer.

The 10 most beautiful car and motorcycle routes in the Netherlands
These 10 routes in the Netherlands have been carefully selected, checked and made equal for TomTom, Garmin and MyRoute-app Navigation by a MyRoute-app RouteXpert. The 10 most beautiful motorcycle and car routes in the Netherlands are always a snapshot, and a personal opinion of the reviewer. This does not alter the fact that every lover of beautiful roads and interesting sights will enjoy these routes.
The ten routes are spread over 10 provinces, we only skipped Flevoland and South Holland. Interesting routes can also be found in the MyRoute app RouteXpert library, but we still want to stick to the 10 most beautiful and not the 12 most beautiful.
Enjoy the many fortresses and castles that are included in the routes, such as Fort Veldhuis in North Holland. But also take a look at the route southeast of Nijmegen and visit the impressive Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial. The route 'Overijssel in bird's eye view' includes the oldest house in the Netherlands and the route along the IJssel is probably the most beautiful piece of asphalt in the Netherlands.
This way there is something for everyone in this route collection. If you do not agree with these 10 routes, please send us an e-mail, indicate which route(s) should be removed and which route you would like to see instead. Maybe your route will be included in this collection of the 10 most beautiful routes in the Netherlands!
