These country houses and castles have been used as a framework to plot the beautiful routes, but the routes remain worthwhile even without visiting the described objects. But of course the route has added value if you stop here and there and take a walk. Not all manors and castles are open to visitors, but these can be spotted from the public road or their garden or park is open to visitors.
The route is for the most part on country roads, the busier N-roads and urban areas are avoided as much as possible. The length of the routes has been kept below 175 km, partly because the average speed will not be that high on many 60 km roads.
Almost every province has one or more routes, only in South Holland and the Flevopolders no routes have been set out because there were no country houses and castles that were eligible for this tour due to their location.
Starting point: Assumburg Castle, Heemskerk

Slot Assumburg
Assumburg Castle, Tolweg 9, 1967 NG Heemskerk
Slot Assumburg probably originally dates from the 13th century, but was renovated in 1546, and is named after the hamlet of Assum between Heemskerk and Uitgeest. The power that the castle radiates is also more apparent than reality. It is in fact an imitation of a medieval castle. The thin walls would not have withstood a siege. Such a castle is usually called a bocage castle. After 1867 the castle remained uninhabited. The area also lost its former glory: the park around the castle disappeared. From 1911 to 15 January 2016 it was owned by the State. The lock was handed over to the state for one guilder with the obligation to restore the lock. The restoration commissioned by the Government Buildings Agency was finally completed around 1980. The nearby orangery had already been restored around 1965. In 1933 the Assumburg was used as a youth hostel. From 2009, the 18th-century castle garden was restored to its original state and opened to the public in 2011. The castle garden includes a fruit orchard, a rose garden, a vegetable and herb garden and a large formal part with a court pond.
Radboud Medemblik Castle, Oudevaartsgat 8, 1671 HM Medemblik
Medemblik Castle was built in 1288 and one of the many castles in the province of North Holland, which were built partly on behalf of Floris V. The castle was a so-called forced castle because Floris not only wanted to build a dam against the frequent infiltrations in his area. by the Frisians, but also have strongholds from which he could keep the newly subjugated West Frisians under his thumb. The castle is now a museum and also has a cafe!
