Vannsjo bij Moss, een van de vele mooie meertjes in het gebied
The route then continues to the birthplace of Roald Amundsen (RP3), the polar explorer who was the first to reach the South Pole. A nice place to look around and enjoy the view over the water. A little further on a dam has been built on a rock. impressive sight (RP4). We then drive further up, along the water, over the island of Rødsøya. A beautiful road along water and forests. You follow this road to Vartig and then we go south again. You drive past Belsbymoen (RP5), a nature park where you can walk and climb a mountain with a wooden lookout tower on it. At Ise we cross the main road and go unpaved for a while. Between lakes, forests and fields, very nice to drive. If you do not want that, you go at Ise (RP6) on the main road (22) towards Sarpsborg and at the 118 you turn left towards Skjeberg. We drive a long way through forests, along lakes and through fields. Until we get to the Svineborg bridges (RP10 and RP11). These connect Norway and Sweden. The new bridge is high and narrow and special. Nice to drive over. You do drive a bit through Sweden: take your passport with you.
When we drive further we arrive in Frederiksten where a large fortress (RP13) can be found on the mountain. There is a nice museum with a lot to see. Here (or in the town) you can also drink coffee or eat something. After a nice drive we take an exit on a dirt road to the high lock of Brekke near a dam and power plant (RP14). Nice to have a look. It is the highest lock in Europe. A little further on is Krappeto. It used to be a lock, but because the lock at Brekke has been raised, a lock was no longer necessary here. The road continues for a short while until we reach Strømsfoss (RP16). There is a lock and a water mill. The route goes right past it, so if you want to see it you have to pay attention.
Further on we arrive in Rakkestad. There is a resistance museum there (RP18), but it may be time for lunch first. For example at Charlies Diner or at Skoglunds bakeri. We then drive a long shortcut on beautiful roads. To enjoy!
Via Kirkebygden we arrive in Moss: a beautiful old place. At Møllebyen there is a city and industrial museum (RP23) and a little further a waterfall. Here you have time and plenty of opportunity to stop again for a drink. A nice spot on the water is at Fiskebasaren Moss.
After this, drive through less beautiful landscape and after a while we return to a more wooded area. There you can see a defense work Vetaåsen batteri (RP29). You have to walk about a kilometer for it. We drive a little further to the north and then down again towards Frederikstad. But first we pass the winter sports resort Kjerringåsen (RP31). You can drive there for a while on the dirt road, but there is little to do in the summer. We continue the road to Frederikstad.
I give this route 5 stars. It is a route through a beautiful area with a lot of variety. Quite a few sights and also nice pieces of unpaved.
