Peneda-Gerês National Park
Soon after leaving the hotel, you will enter into the Peneda-Gêres National Park which has one of the most unique landscapes in northern Portugal. When you tour the land of wild horses, your senses will be sharpened to the colours of the mountain, the scent of heather, and the sounds of animals roaming free. There are many viewpoints (I have only marked a few) to take in the breathtaking scenery, some go on for as long as the eye can see.
You will be on a twisty, tree lined road and heading for the hills and Soajo Mountains. You have the option of visiting the sanctuary and hermitage at Peneda. The Peneda sanctuary is situated beneath a large granite mountain with a spectacular staircase of 300 steps and different altars with figures of Christ's footsteps, an important example of neoclassical church architecture in Portugal.
If it is hot, I have marked a spot where there is a lovely little shady river under a bridge, the beautiful cool and clear water of the Ribeiro da Bordença has the appearance of a fairy grotto.
At Soajo there is a group of stone granaries or espigueiros, these are iconic and emblematic structures of the Portuguese rural landscape, stone stores that are built on stilts to keep the vermin away from harvested crops, you'll see more of these later on the route. In addition to visiting the espigueiros themselves, the village of Soajo offers a charming atmosphere with narrow cobblestone streets, granite houses, and a preserved rural environment.
The magnificent Alto Lindoso Dam is a great place for a photo and is one of the most powerful dams in Portugal. It began operating in 1993 and was the object of several records. It has the biggest distance between the level of the reservoir and the turbine room and the elevator is one of the highest and fastest in Europe. Besides producing energy, the dam has a governor function to avoid sudden changes in river flow. After crossing the dam you can stop for a coffee before visiting the impressive castle dating back to the 11th century, overlooking the border with Spain and the valley of the Lima river. From its ramparts you can get a fine view of the sixty granaries from the 18th century (espigueiros) clustered under its protection.
The route continues in the Peneda-Gêres National Park and will take you into some very rural countryside that represents this part of Portugal well. Some of the roads are small but they have been chosen to see the best sights.
I have suggested a lunch stop at the small town of Paredes de Coura, there is a good selection of restaurants and a fuel station.
After lunch, the route use the delightful N-301, this road is a little larger an has plenty of bends to keep the smile on your face. After 1 hour you will reach the Atlantic Ocean and your hotel.
Enjoy
