Route Summary
This all-road route south of Maribor starts and ends at Hotel Bellevue in the Pohorje Mountains.

The route combines asphalt with smooth gravel and passes castles, rivers, and nature reserves. Along the way, you'll pass Rače Castle, the Rački ribniki ponds, Statenberg Castle, and the Boč Mountain viewpoint.

After a lunch break, a challenging unpaved section follows with an alternative paved route for those who want to avoid it.

You'll return to the starting point via Poljčane, the Čezlak quarry, and the church of St. Andrew. A varied ride full of nature, culture, and riding pleasure for the adventurous rider.

The route receives 4 points because the roads along the way are wonderful. The scenery is stunning, there are plenty of beautiful historical sites to visit, and there are also plenty of delicious local restaurants along the way.

Unfortunately, it doesn't get a full 5 stars because TomTom, Garmin, and OSM occasionally struggle with the route. This means you can't always rely on your navigation system, and sometimes have to check your surroundings yourself to determine which way to go.

RouteXpert Review
This varied all-road route starts and ends at Hotel Bellevue, located in the Pohorje Mountains south of Maribor. The route combines quiet paved roads with well-maintained gravel paths and offers a wonderful introduction to the green, hilly landscape of this region. The ride is suitable for those with an all-road motorcycle and some experience or courage on unpaved terrain. For the more challenging off-road section, an alternative paved detour is included.

From the hotel, descend towards the village of Rače, where you can stop at Rače Castle. This castle dates back to the 16th century and was expanded in later centuries into a stately complex with a moat, park, and outbuildings. It's situated in a peaceful setting and is a good starting point for experiencing the atmosphere of the region.

As you drive south out of the village, you'll pass the Rački ribniki – a collection of fishponds that have been declared an ornithological natural monument. The area consists of ponds, marshes, and wet meadows and is an important breeding ground for waterfowl. A short stop here is worthwhile for nature lovers.

The route continues south along easy roads. After a short while, you'll pass Statenberg Castle, an impressive Baroque palace once owned by the noble Attems family. Its location south of Pečke offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills. A little further on lies the village of Makole, where Gostilna Lesjak is a great spot for a coffee break or a light meal.

The next section of the route meanders along the Dravinja River, which winds its way through the valley. This river is a tributary of the Drava and is known for its clear waters and natural banks.

From the valley, you can optionally deviate from the route and turn left into Studenice, a small village with an interesting history. Here you'll find a partially restored castle ruin, a former monastery with a church, and the remains of an old Roman road. It's a short additional drive for those with time and an interest in culture and history.

After Studenice, the route begins its ascent towards Boč National Park, a protected nature reserve surrounding the mountain of the same name. The park is known for its limestone formations, forests, and rare plant species. The ascent of Boč is a beautiful drive: narrow, winding roads through dense forest. At the top, you can climb the lookout tower for panoramic views of the Dravinja Valley and the surrounding hills.

After enjoying the view, take the same route back down and wind your way east through the forest, creating a lovely long loop. Midday, Okrepčevalnica Zelena dolina is a logical spot for lunch. This simple inn is peacefully nestled in the greenery and offers hearty local dishes.

After the break, the more challenging unpaved section of the route follows. This section runs along forest and gravel paths with some steeper sections. For riders with limited off-road experience, this section can be challenging. Therefore, the route includes POIs with alternative, fully paved routes that follow the same direction. The POIs are marked with “Offroad deviation X/4”.

After this more challenging section, the route briefly passes through a more crowded area with more villages. Fortunately, not long after, you head back north into the mountains, enjoying some delightful bends and hairpin bends through the forests.

Those who need fuel can fill up in Poljčane, where there are also a few small shops and cafes. The route then follows the Dravinja River again for a while, with quiet roads and occasional views of the river valley.

After this relaxing section, you'll turn north again. Cross the lowlands for a short break at Taček Caffe or the Snoopy Bar, both simple but friendly places to relax.

Then the climb back into the Pohorje Mountains begins, alternating between asphalt and gravel. Here you'll pass the Cezlak quarry, where a photo stop is worthwhile. The quarry is known for its olivine, a unique green stone mined here.

The route then crosses the Oplotnica River, a mountain stream with clear water and small waterfalls in the area. For several kilometers, you now traverse the Pohorje Mountains. The road winds delightfully upwards, reaching an altitude of over 1,000 meters. Not far from the hotel, you'll see the Sedežnice ski slope, a small local ski slope used in winter but offering beautiful views of the hills in summer.

The final section leads to the church of St. Andrew, a well-known landmark in the region. The church is situated in a clearing in the forest and is popular with hikers and mountain bikers. From here, it's a short walk back to Hotel Bellevue, where the route ends.

This tour offers a diverse mix of nature, culture, and riding pleasure. The balance between asphalt and gravel makes it an ideal day trip for those who prefer to use their all-road motorcycle for what it's intended: comfortable touring on paved roads, with the occasional unpaved section. The well-marked alternative route also makes it suitable for those who prefer to skip the more demanding off-road riding.

With viewpoints, castles, rivers and quiet villages along the way, this is a diverse ride that gives an excellent impression of the Slovenian landscape south of Maribor.
