RouteXpert Review
Route 7 of the Southern Dozen; The Long Dam Ride. The Southern Dozen are twelve rides based in Johnson City that travel all around the region. Each one is an adventure in itself that will take you through winding curves, breath taking natural scenery, historic landmarks, local points of interest, and fun attractions. Whether you feel like exploring caves, seeing wolves, touring historic sites, leaning into heart-pounding curves or just taking in the views, you’ll find a ride that’s exactly what you’re looking for.
This tour takes you through rugged gorges and past rocky cliffs, mountain streams, tranquil lakes, unique sites, spectacular formations, and miles of roller-coaster dips and rural charm. We will visit a couple of dams with spectacular views, cross some beautiful bridges and ride al lot of scenic roads; one of them is the “the Snake”, which is said to have "489 curves, 3 mountains, 1 valley packed into 33 miles!", so this is a thrilling ride.
The first stop is at Boone Dam (RP3), a hydroelectric and flood control dam on the South Fork Holston River.
We continue via Bristol, where you can stop for a drink and a snack, to the next stop at the South Holston Dam (RP7), a hydroelectric and flood control dam on the South Fork Holston River in Sullivan County.
At RP9 we start “the Snake” a beautiful scenic and thrilling ride through the Tennessee mountains and Shady Valley into Mountain City. At RP11 we’ll stop for lunch at the Shady Valley Country Store; a Biker store and great deli with souvenirs available.
We continue our ride through the Cherokee National Mountains via Damascus and Butler along lake Watauga to the Wilbur Dam (RP16), a hydroelectric dam on the Watauga River in Carter County. It is one of two dams on the river owned and operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
The ride continues up north via Elizabethon, where you can stop to take picture of the Covered Bridge (RP18), to Bristol Motor Speedway (RP21) an NASCAR short track venue.
On the way back to Johnson City you can visit the Rocky Mountain living museum (RP22), it sits at the foot of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains and offers tours along the different sites where they use living history to enhance public understanding of the daily life and values of the early settlers in our area.
I rate this ride with 5 stars because of the nice scenery and interesting places to visit.
