RouteXpert Review
Do you dream of riding volcanic roads, through fragrant eucalyptus forests, and with views of both the ocean and the crater rim? Then this tour through the central part of Maui is your perfect motorcycle adventure. You will climb the slopes of Haleakalā, ride through historic villages and discover hidden viewpoints. This route offers a unique mix of nature, tranquility and Hawaiian culture. Pure motorcycle madness, but then tropical.

You start your ride at the Tour Start Point; Maui Beach Hotel in Kahului, close to the ocean and the airport. The sun is already burning softly on the asphalt and the smell of the sea is still in the air. After a short run through the city, you drive onto the Haleakalā Highway – a climb that is gradual but steep. The route winds up past Makawao and Kula, where the landscape changes from sugar cane fields to fragrant pines and giant ferns. You feel the temperature drop and the air become crisper. The view opens up, and as soon as you turn onto Crater Road, you know: this is driving on a volcano. On the flanks of Haleakalā lies the Tour Photo Point; Magnetic Peak, a volcanic peak known for its magnetic influence on compasses. You are here at an altitude of more than 3,000 meters. Don't forget to breathe deeply – and enjoy the view over the Maui Plateau.
Soon you will reach the Tour Break Point; Hosmer Grove, a forest area with conifers from New Zealand, Japan and North America. It is cool, quiet and almost spooky. Birdwatchers come here to indulge in species that are only found on Maui. A break, a moment of silence.
You continue south and descend again along narrow, well-paved roads. The tropical vegetation makes way for open views and you reach the Tour Photo Point; Polipoli Springs State Recreation Area. A hidden gem with misty pine forests, created in the thirties. Here Maui feels more like the Alps than the Pacific. On the way back you slowly descend via Lower Kula Road. You pass the Tour View Point; Harold W. Rice Memorial Park, with a panoramic view of the north and south coast of Maui. A top spot for sunset, or for a selfie with the islands in the distance.
After the descent, the route winds its way down the Pulehu Road into the lowlands. You’ll ride between lava fields and abandoned farms until you reach the Hansen Road and Mokulele Highway near Kahului again. Time to refuel at the Tour Fuel Point; Hele – a convenient 24/7 fuel stop with everything you need.
You will end the ride back at the Tour End Point; Maui Beach Hotel, where you can relax with a cold drink by the sea.

This loop around Central Maui is one you won’t soon forget. From ocean to volcano, from tropical green to volcanic red – every turn is a postcard. The roads are well maintained, quiet and winding enough to get your riding heart racing. If you ever wanted to know what riding a motorcycle in paradise feels like, this is it. Helmet on, sun on your back – aloha Maui!
