You leave from Durrës and take the road to Fushë-Krujë. The road is not very exciting. You drive through the flat landscape with views of the mountains in the distance. Fortunately, this part does offer an obscure sight: the striking statue of George W. Bush. The monument honors the former President of the United States for his contribution to the relationship between Albania and the US. It marks a period of international cooperation and friendship and recalls the role the US played in supporting Albania in its quest for independence and democracy after the fall of the communist regime.
When leaving Fushë-Krujë you also leave the main road behind you and drive towards the North via narrow country roads. Before you continue driving, it is wise to do some shopping in the charming village of Fshat-Lac. This stopover offers the perfect opportunity to provide yourself with a tasty lunch, because you will encounter few lunch spots along the way.
Once you are packed, the route continues north and you drive against the Lumi Mat. Lumi Mat is an important river flowing through inland Albania, known for its clear waters and surrounding forests. It offers fishing opportunities and is of ecological importance to the region, as it flows through several nature reserves. This river is a popular destination for short trips and outdoor activities.
As you drive along the winding river, take a break at Restaurant Doçi. You can possibly enjoy an early lunch here before you start the adventurous part of the tour.
After this break the road becomes increasingly winding and exciting. You slowly climb upwards, making the views more spectacular every time. You now also have the option to follow the dirt path to Spaç Prison, a historic site that bears witness to Albania's past. Here you can explore the impressive history of this location. If you want to avoid the unpaved roads, you can turn north on SH30, but a visit to the prison is a unique experience that makes the journey worthwhile.
During the communist regime led by Enver Hoxha, Spaç Prison was infamous in the 1960s as one of Albania's strictest prisons, where political prisoners and dissidents were held under harsh conditions, including torture and forced labor. This prison symbolizes the repression and human rights violations that occurred in Albania during that regime. The building is currently empty. In the past there were plans to turn it into a museum, but unfortunately that never happened.
After leaving the unpaved mountain pass and driving a bit along the Fan River, you can take a break in Fushë-Arrëz. The choice of terraces offers a welcome break from your adventurous journey.
With a good break in your stomach you continue the journey over the Qafë Qelë mountain pass. The winding road offers an abundance of panoramic views and spectacular scenery. As it is a major access route to Shkodër, traffic may be heavier. The pass follows the Drini river. The river is an important waterway in Albania, flowing through the north of the country and offering a picturesque landscape with clear water and green banks. It is a crucial river that has historically played a role in trade and transportation in the region.
You are approaching your final destination, the beautiful city of Shkodër. Before you end your motorcycle ride, you can refuel to be prepared for the next day's ride. Choose to spend the night in lively Shkodër at the Wanderer hostel or, if you prefer the peace and quiet of nature, outside the city at B&B St. Joseph.
Shkodër is less known to tourists than cities such as Tirana and Gjirokaster, but offers a number of interesting historical sights. If you have the time, visit the Rozafa Fortress (medieval castle), the Marubi Photo Museum and the Xhamia e Plumbit Mosque (18th century architectural masterpiece).

About this region
The Shkodër Bazaar (also known as the Grand Bazaar or the Old Bazaar) was the economic and civic hub of Shkodër, Albania for centuries and was one of the most important trade hubs in the Western Balkans. After the rise of the People's Socialist Republic of Albania in 1944, the bazaar became a camp for refugees from the Orthodox population of Greek-speaking Albanians fleeing the Greek Civil War. In 1968, the bazaar was demolished and replaced with a park.
