RouteXpert Review
This route takes you straight through the land of Uilenspiegel, past Groede in Zeeland Flanders, Aardenburg, and across the border to Maldegem and Damme in Belgium. The atmosphere is friendly and rural, dotted with castles, museums, and landmarks. Perfect for those who want a tour with a mix of history, nature, and village charm. Be surprised by quiet dikes and stately Flemish lanes.

You'll start in Groede at the charming café Het Overleg. Shortly after departure, you'll delve into the Zeeland farmland towards Oostburg – a small but lively town. Then, along quiet roads via Sint Kruis to Aardenburg, the oldest town in Zeeland, with a Roman soul and medieval charm. After crossing the border, the Flemish town of Maldegem lies before you, with its graceful St. Anne's Castle as a photograph-worthy highlight. Then you'll meander towards Damme, where the Uilenspiegel Museum guarantees a unique stop.
Wherever Tijl Uilenspiegel appears, something happens: he turns things upside down, turns the world upside down, and shows us our true actions in his mirror.
Ulenspiegel is a literary figure, created in Brunswick sometime towards the end of the Middle Ages. His fame spread, among other places, to Damme, the most beautiful town on this route.
The 19th-century Flemish writer De Coster even placed his cradle there and had the freedom-loving Tijl experience his adventures in Damme together with his fiancée Nele and his companion Lamme Goedzak.
The ride continues via Knokke-Heist and the tranquil town of Retranchement back to the Netherlands. Near Cadzand, you can breathe in the sea air for a bit. Finally, you return via Zuidzande and Nieuwvliet to Groede, where you can relax at the starting point—or rather, the restart point.

The Uilenspiegel Route is a relaxed loop with cultural stops, a touch of Belgium, and a handful of quiet dikes. The roads are mostly good and quiet, with the occasional bumpy section in Flanders. Ideal for motorcyclists who don't necessarily want to go fast, but still want to see a lot. Breaks and refueling are cleverly spaced out – and you finish where you started: well-maintained in Groede.

About this region
Zeeland is the westernmost and least populous province of the Netherlands. The province, located in the south-west of the country, borders North Brabant to the east, South Holland to the north, and the country of Belgium to the south and west. It consists of a number of islands and peninsulas (hence its name, meaning "Sealand") and a strip bordering the Flemish provinces of East and West Flanders. Its capital is Middelburg with a population of 48,544 as of November 2019, the largest municipality in Zeeland is Terneuzen (pop. 54,589). Zeeland has two seaports: Vlissingen and Terneuzen. Its area is 2,934 square kilometres (1,130 sq mi), of which 1,151 square kilometres (440 sq mi) is water, and it has a population of 383,689 as of November 2019.
Large parts of Zeeland are below sea level. The last great flooding of the area was in 1953. Tourism is an important economic activity. In the summer, its beaches make it a popular destination for tourists, especially German tourists. In some areas, the population can be two to four times higher during the high summer season. The coat of arms of Zeeland shows a lion half-emerged from water, and the text luctor et emergo (Latin for "I struggle and emerge"). The country of New Zealand was named after Zeeland after it was sighted by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman.
