Route Summary
Day 2 of our 9 day Road trip through Germany and Denmark.

Today we drive from Cuxhaven in Germany to Sønderby Denmark.

The roads in Denmark are very good, but the speed limits are very low, so take your time and plan ahead.

The countryside is beautiful and the panoramas along the coast are wonderful.

Motorcyclists are welcome at the campsites, of which there are plenty.

It is a 285 kilometer ride. The roads are easy to drive, no challenging bends or sights, that is why this route gets a 3 star rating.

RouteXpert Review
This route describes day 2 of my Roadtrip that I drove with friends in the summer of 2018.

We leave from the campsite “Nordsee” in Cuxhaven and drive over provincial roads through Germany and Denmark to the seaside resort of Sønderby in Denmark.

At Wischafen we cross the river Elbe with the ferry to Glückstadt. The crossing takes about 25 minutes and there is a ferry every 30 minutes. In the summer it can be very busy, so expect waiting times.

After the crossing we drive on back roads along the river Stör, every now and then there are sections with a few nice bends.
At Embüren we turn onto the N77 and drive via Rendsburg, Schleswig and Flensburg towards Denmark. Just before Schleswig you can enjoy a delicious lunch at Pizzeria Solemia in Jagel.

Once we have crossed the border we drive along the Flensborg Fjord, a beautiful drive with a wonderful panorama, it is definitely worth stopping to take some pictures and enjoy the beautiful view over the bay.

After about 1 hour drive we reach the town of Sønderborg, a nice town to stop for a short break and some sightseeing, there are several cafes, restaurants and you can visit the Sønderborg Castle.

Sønderborg Castle one of the most iconic castles in Southern Denmark. The castle, which is now a museum, shows the history of Sønderborg, the border area and the Schleswig-Holstein region that the Danes lost to the Germans in the 19th century.

End point for today is the beach camping in the seaside resort Sønderby. A simple camping with a snack bar/restaurant, shop and a beautiful beach on the Fjord.

About this region
Bremerhaven (German pronunciation: [ˌbʁeːmɐˈhaːfn̩] (listen), lit. 'Bremener Harbour', Low German: Bremerhoben) is a city at the seaport of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, a state of the Federal Republic of Germany.
It forms a semi-enclave in the state of Lower Saxony and is located at the mouth of the Weser on its eastern bank, opposite the town of Nordenham. Though a relatively new city, it has a long history as a trade port and today is one of the most important German ports, playing a role in Germany's trade.
Wesermünde was a neighboring city created in 1924 through the merger of Geestemünde and Lehe. In 1939, Bremerhaven was incorporated into Wesermünde, but in 1947 the cities were collectively renamed as Bremerhaven and returned to the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.
