The northern part of England up to the Scottish border consists largely of national parks and is relatively sparsely populated. This route runs from York to Newcastle upon Tyne through the North York Moors National Park.

North York Moors National Park is a nature reserve in the north of England. Established in 1952, the park is 1,435 square kilometers and is located in the county of North Yorkshire. You will find heaths, hills, beautiful valleys and also beautiful coastal areas with hiking trails. Inland you will only find small places like Danby, Helmsley and Pickering. The North York Moors are great for walking, and that is certainly the case for the coastal area with its cliffs and bays. At the end of the summer you can see the beautiful moors in bloom. They then discolor from brown to purple. By the sea you can visit the historic town of Whitby and also picturesque villages such as Runswick Bay, Staithes and Robin Hood's Bay. The pretty Victorian seaside town of Scarborough is located on the edge of the park. In and outside the park are also historical sites such as Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard.

After the start in York, the route heads north towards Pickering. Don't forget to refuel as the North York Moors have few villages and therefore few amenities.

Soon you will drive past Castle Howard. Castle Howard is a stately home in North Yorkshire, England, in the civil parish of Henderskelfe, 15 miles north of York. It is a private residence and has been home to the Carlisle branch of the Howard family for over 300 years.

From Pickering it goes up the hill to the high plains and you can enjoy the view from many places. You have to be lucky with the weather because it can also rain a lot in this area. So make sure you have good waterproof clothing when you are on the motorcycle. The route winds through the area over hills and through valleys. Along the way you will come across a few small villages, but most of it runs through unpopulated and empty area. If you find it foggy and drizzling then you immediately have the atmosphere of the English horror films and detectives. If you happen to come across a ford, which are announced with "Ford" you can read the water depth on the posts. The water height is very dependent on rainfall and can vary from a few centimeters to many tens of centimeters. Decide for yourself whether you are going through it or whether you are looking for a detour.

In the town of Hutton-le-Hole you will pass the Ryedale Folk Museum, which offers an open-air glimpse into the past of the area's illustrious history.

Just after the village of Helmsley you drive past the remains of the Rievaulx Abbey. For this you have to turn left to the parking lot. Rievaulx Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey. Rievaulx Abbey was founded in 1132 by twelve monks sent from Clairvaux Abbey. Its purpose was to have a mission center for the colonization of Northern England and Scotland. It was the first Cistercian abbey in the north. It was once one of the most prosperous abbeys in England. It was closed and destroyed during the Dissolution under Henry VIII in 1538.

The route leaves the North York Moors on the north side at Stokesley where another refueling stop and lunch is planned. In this village there are several options for lunch, so you can find out what you like the most. After Stokesley we drive into civilization again and we encounter some larger cities that you have to go through. The route continues along the coast towards Newcastle upon Tyne and ends at the DFDS Ferry Terminal. Just before Newcastle, you can plan another stop at the beach before heading towards the boat.

I give this route 4 stars because of the attractive surroundings, beautiful nature and excellent roads.
