RouteXpert Review
This route will take you from the Lake District National Park to Snowdonia National Park by only using 2 short sections of motorway. After just 30 minutes you will arrive at the Devil's Bridge, a magnificent three-arched bridge over the River Lune, probably dating from the 12th or 13th century, it is scheduled as an ancient monument and it is a popular haunt for motorcycle enthusiasts who congregate at weekends in the adjoining parking area to discuss all things mechanical over a mug of hot tea and a bacon butty.
Then the route travels through beautiful English countryside, passing through pretty villages and across the Forest of Bowland Natural Landscape. Bowland is essentially upland country forming part of the Pennines, sharing many of the characteristics of other upland areas like the Peak District and Yorkshire Dales National Park but its essential landscape character is one of grandeur and isolation. The area is dominated by a central upland core of deeply incised gritstone fells with summits above 450m and vast tracts of heather-covered peat moorland.

A lunch or coffee stop is suggested at the beautiful village of Slaidburn, next to the River Hodder.
The route by-passes the busy city of Preston by joining the M6 motorway for just a short distance before taking the A59 to Liverpool.
At Liverpool, you will visit Crosby Beach and the art installation called 'Another Place' by Sir Antony Gormley. The100 figures, made of cast iron from casts of the artist's own body, stretch across a 3km stretch of beach and into the sea, all facing the horizon. The installation explores the relationship between the human body, space, and the natural world.

After the beach you can top up with fuel, food and coffee at a large retail park.

Next is through the Kingsway Tunnel that will take you under the River Mersey.
Motorcycles keep left at the end of the tunnel and use the dedicated lane which is free of charge, cars pay £2.30 (2025).
Exiting the tunnel you join another short section of motorway, the M53.
The Kingsway tunnel was the first of 4 tunnels, the others are after you travel into Wales and are on the North Wales Expressway A55, this scenic dual carriageway road takes you to the Travelodge hotel in Bangor where you can then plan your routes for exploring Wales.
Enjoy
