Route Summary
Hawaii is not cheap and not exactly close by. At least a 16-hour flight from the Netherlands. Yet a holiday to this archipelago in the Pacific Ocean is definitely worth it, if only for its magnificent nature.
Certainly not a destination you can go to by motorcycle, fortunately there are plenty of rental companies on the large islands where you can rent a motorcycle or car.
For those who want to explore these exotic islands, we have included a number of routes in the RouteXpert library.

The choice to do this by motorcycle or car is yours.

Because of the many beautiful viewpoints and overwhelming nature, this route gets 5 stars.

RouteXpert Review
The far north of the island of Maui is very different from the rest of the island. This landscape is wild and green. After miles of sandy beaches, filled with homes and resorts, the coast becomes steeper and rockier. The Kaheliki Highway is also included in this route. This route is often discouraged due to its potential danger. Here you will not find spectacular landscapes or paradisiacal beaches, but endless greenery and a blue ocean.

Your first stop is at the Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge. Keālia is a refuge for many species native and endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Established in 1992 to protect the wetland habitat of two endangered marsh birds, Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge covers approximately 700 acres and is one of the few natural wetlands left in the Hawaiian Islands. It is the largest lowland wetland remaining on Maui.
Then take a photo at Olowalu juice stand, where you can buy smoothies with flavors such as papaya, mango, strawberry, pineapple, coconut, banana and more. And also natural fruit juices and fruits.
In Lahaina it is time for coffee and possibly some shopping, there are several shops and a large parking lot. After the stop there is a nice viewpoint, be sure to take some pictures!

Then you will embark on the Kahekili Highway, one of the most dangerous roads in Maui and also considered one of the most dangerous roads in the country.
The Kahekili Highway is divided into 3 sections, the first section is a beautiful, wide and fairly smooth road that is safe. In the second part, the beautiful road with its beautiful yellow stripes gives way to a simple asphalt road that narrows and becomes very tight and winding after 2 km. This 13 kilometer stretch is known to be dangerous. The third and final section will no longer pose any problems, as the road will widen again near the first residential areas.
Do not look for large parking spaces or signs along this road, there are none. Everywhere along the roadside you will see small recesses, do not hesitate to stop at them, there will probably be a beautiful panorama or a sight to discover behind them.

In any case, a stop at the Nakalele blowhole, almost at the northernmost point of Maui, marked by a small cape surmounted by a very simple lighthouse that looks more like a beacon: the Nakalele Point Lighthouse. Here the waves crash against the rocks, providing a pleasant spectacle when the ocean is in turmoil. The Nakalele Blowhole, a small geyser formed by the waves, which erupts when a large wave washes under the rocks. To really see its power, the sea must be rough, otherwise the spray only rises a few centimeters. In heavy weather, the force of the waves is such that the water can be thrown several tens of meters out of the ground.
Then you come to Ohai Trail, this 2 km loop, which you can walk in 30 minutes, is not difficult. So if you feel like stretching your legs and enjoying nature, stop here and take the walk, you will also encounter beautiful views of the ocean.
After the wading a stop at Olivijn Pools, this popular spot for an unusual but still very dangerous dive. The pools are hidden at the bottom of the road, a few meters from the ocean. When the sea is calm, it is pleasant to come and swim in it, where the water takes on a beautiful emerald shade. The water level varies depending on the weather of the previous days, with the waves more or less filling the small cavities. But be careful, it can be extremely dangerous, see also the sign along the way.
After all this effort it is time for coffee again, which you can do at Bay View Cafe, which will undoubtedly also provide some nice pictures.
For hiking enthusiasts, you can stop at the Waihee Ridge Trail. this 7KM walk takes approximately 2H30M. But here too you can take some beautiful pictures. If you want to skip this walk, skip point 19.

Once in Wailuku, head to “The Needle” viewpoint. Located in Iao Valley view that is easily accessible to everyone. Although you won't spend a long time here, it is a must-see. Not much to do after you've seen the main attraction. It is one of the wettest places on earth.
After this spectacle you return to the hotel, where you can spend the day quietly at the beach or swimming pool.
