RouteXpert Review
This route from the Motorbike guide France part 1 takes us from Provence, via the Camargue to the Mediterranean Bert Loorbach, the writer, is an enthusiastic motorcyclist himself and lived in France for a year and a half. During that time he devoted himself to mapping the unknown and beautiful roads of France especially for motorcyclists.
Hotels, campsites, places of interest, parking spaces and restaurants are listed as POIs.
This route contains a number of cities where Vincent van Gogh stayed, along the route there are a number of POIs that remind us of this.
We start in St Remy, where Van Gogh stayed in an institution, we drive via the Les Alpilles to Baux, where we can stop to take a break and enjoy the beautiful panorama.
You can also view the De Cathédrale d'Images (RP3 Cathedral of the Statues) here. This is a permanent display, founded in 1976, where large-scale images are projected onto the walls of immense stone spaces, dug into the rocks of the Val d'Enfer (RP4 Valley of Hell).
We continue to Fontvieille via the beautiful D33. At RP7 you can visit the Windmill of Alphonse Daudet.
In this mill the author Alphonse Daudet wrote "Letters from My Windmill", a collection of short stories.
A little further away is an aqueduct "Aqueduc Romain de Barbegal" (RP8) in the middle of the landscape, definitely worth stopping for a while. The aqueduct and mill of Barbegal is a Roman watermill complex that is located on the territory of the municipality of Fontvieille and is referred to as "the largest known concentration of mechanical power in the ancient world".
After this we drive along a beautiful road to Arles (RP10), the home of van Gogh and inspiration for many of his paintings. There are a number of museums, amphitheater and other historical sites that are worth visiting. We also take the time to have lunch in one of the many good restaurants or cafés.
We continue our journey on the D35 along the river Rhône, just before Port Saint Louis du Rhône we take the ferry to Salin de Giraud (RP15).
We are now driving north into the Camargue. This marshy area is formed by the Rhone delta and is a unique national park. The Camargue is known for its white horses, cowboys and flamingos. It is a special experience to drive the motorcycle here.
The route runs around the large lake "Etang de Vaccarès" to our final destination Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. There are several hotels and a number of campsites where you can spend the night.
This route is a beautiful drive from Provence via the Camargue to the Mediterranean coast in a beautiful setting, the roads are not spectacular but beautiful with occasional beautiful panoramas.
I therefore rate this with 4 stars.
