Route Summary
That France is one of the most beautiful and best touring countries is beyond doubt. It offers an incredibly varied landscape with good roads and pleasant climate. It is not for nothing that you see so many motorcyclists there. My previous series of routes in France were based on the route descriptions from the Motortourgids France part 1 made by Bert Loorbach.
This route comes from Motortourgids France part 2 and the original name is "From Burgundy to the Rhone Valley; Route 4: circumferential movement east of Lyon".
In Motorbike guide France part 2 a difference has been made between approach routes and trips in a certain area. The approach routes can also be used in combination with the routes from Motortourgids France part 1
The routes are sometimes slightly adjusted based on the tips that Bert Loorbach gives in his description, or because of a different place to spend the night, or to achieve the minimum length of 2 hours for the MRA Library. For each route there is a more detailed description in the review, including options to stay overnight or places of interest en route, which are also indicated with a POI and if possible with a short description
The route is made suitable for Garmin, TomTom, Harley-Davidson BoomBox 2019 and Navigation App, can be downloaded for free and without My-Route-app registration. To do this, first click on the 'Use route' button and then on 'Save as'.

RouteXpert Review
On the way from Burgundy to the Rhone Valley you will inevitably arrive at Lyon. Most of them take the boring A46 ring road or drive straight through the gray city with its many tunnels. But there are also other, better and nicer options and this is the last of the four alternative routes that lead you around Lyon. Three routes are on the west side and one route runs between Clermont-Ferrand and Lyon where you can enjoy the beautiful plateau of the Velay. This is also very suitable if you come from western Burgundy. Then one along St. Étienne and the Col de Ia République, and one that stays reasonably close to Lyon and comes out just below, in Givors. The eastern route is an alternative for those who like to descend as nationally as possible on this side and I describe this in this fourth and final review of diversions.
The route description starts in Bourg-en-Bresse, the capital of the Bresse. We take the D22 and in one fell swoop you are back in rural France. This area still belongs to "La Dombes", a large collection of shallow ponds and swamps where water birds have found a paradise.
The landscape is fairly flat and the road is spacious and quiet, with plane trees along the edge. After Chalamont (RP2) it is 11 kilometers to Mexímieux, if you have the time it is worthwhile to take a look in Pérouges (RP3). This village is just before Mexímieux and is a beautiful old place with winding streets, old squares and tranquil courtyards. The French government is so proud of Pérouges that the then President Clinton was also taken here during his state visit.
After Meximieux you have to be careful that you have the right exit in the direction of Loyettes and Crémíeu. This is the D65, which takes a short left towards Lyon just after Mexímieux on the N84. This nice country road is a bit indefinable to the south. The case is not to drive all the way to Pont-de-Chéruy but to continue towards Crémieu. Just before this place is a roundabout (RP9) where you take the D75 towards L'Isle-d'Abeau and Vrenne.
Here you can clearly see that Lyon is an important transit area, because the trucks drive to and fro. This is also the least fun part of the route and to complete the picture there is also an immense prison just along the road. Fortunately, it doesn't take long and you can comfort yourself with the thought that there are always hundreds of fewer trucks than on the A46.
After the roundabout at Lafayette it is fortunately a bit more pleasant to drive, at Vienne the detour is over and you can continue your planned route to your destination.
This route is actually an option to bypass busy Lyon and therefore not really a tour ride but I still rate it with 3 *** stars because it still has some nice parts and you drive partly through the green hilly landscape.
