RouteXpert Review
Day 7 of 14 on a cross country adventure across AmericaLeaving Doge City you head out across the Kansas plains. Pull over to see the Santa Fe Trails Ruts. (WP2) This is a 2 mile section of the trails used by the settlers as they moved across the plains to seek out heir new life. Dependant on time of year these are not always easy to see.
A break in Garden City and you head north to the place where the last Indian battle in Kansas fought. At the Battle of Punished Woman’s Fork, Cheyenne chiefs Dull Knife and Little Wolf were leading their people back to their homelands. Hiding from the soldiers during the day, the Indians traveled by night and made their way to present-day Scott County, Kansas where they took refuge in the Valley of Punished Woman’s Fork in late September 1878. For two days they rested, re-supplied their food and fortified their position in what is today known as Battle Canyon. (WP5)
Arriving in Oakley further north, take time to visit The Buffalo Bill Museum (WP12) before heading West again. Heading along Highway 40 there is more history to see at the Fort Wallace Museum, (WP13) at one time this was the most westerly military post in Kansas.
You now head West again and continue in the direction across wide open spaces. This whole area millions of years ago used to be underwater and it is flat…very flat. Leaving Kansas and Crossing into Colorado the open plains continue.
Eventually the horizon starts to grow and you can see the Colorado Mountains in the distance.
Arriving in Colorado Springs it is a stark contrast to the openness and the plains you have passed through today.
Entering The Garden of the Gods it feels as though you are in a different world to the rest of the day. Take time to just enjoy the dramatic views, towering sandstone rock formations against a backdrop of snow-capped Pikes Peak and brilliant blue skies.
Leaving the park it is time to stop and the hotel and prepare for tomorrows mountain riding
A mix of History and straight lines across the Plains equals a 3 star day
Buffalo Bill Statue WP12
Balanced and Steamboat Rocks WP25
