The skyline of Berat
Your adventure begins in Berat, a picturesque town known as "the city of a thousand windows." Before you hit the road, it is useful to refuel and do some shopping, because it is uncertain whether you will find enough places to eat along the way. Once you're done, head to the first sight of the day: the Osumi River.
The winding roads along the Osumi River offer spectacular views of the famous Osumi Gorge. This gorge is a true natural wonder and shows the impressive power of nature. Take your time to enjoy the breathtaking views and don't forget to bring your camera to capture these beautiful moments. Three spots are marked along the route where you have a perfect view of the gorge.
A highlight of the ride is the opportunity to drive over an old wooden bridge that spans the gorge. This bridge adds an extra touch of adventure to your journey while allowing you to admire the splendor of the gorge from a unique perspective. Of course you can also park in front of the bridge and then walk up the bridge on foot and take in the depth of the gorge.
After the excitement of Osumi Gorge, take a short break at Hotel Kanioni before continuing your journey to the famous Kasabashi Bridge (Ura e Kasabashit). This historic bridge (built in 1823) is an engineering masterpiece and offers an interesting insight into the construction techniques of the past. The bridge is an example of traditional Ottoman architecture and is made of stone arches that blend harmoniously into the landscape. Stop here to admire the architectural splendor of this bridge up close.
Then you continue to the Tomorri Mountain National Park, a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers. The park is known for its rugged landscapes and pristine beauty. The park, also known as Parku Kombëtar Mali i Tomorrit, covers an area of approximately 241 square kilometers and is known for its pristine beauty, rich biodiversity and spectacular landscapes.
The highlight of the park is the majestic Tomorri Mountain, which reaches a height of approximately 2,416 meters above sea level. This imposing mountain is a sacred place for the locals and has deep cultural significance in Albanian history. According to legend, the mountain is said to be the resting place of Baba Tomor, a spiritual figure and a symbol of wisdom.
The park is home to a diverse ecosystem, ranging from lush forests to alpine meadows. Here you will find diverse flora and fauna, including rare plant species and wild animals such as brown bears, wolves, wild boars, and various bird species.
During your ride you will be enchanted by the lush forests, vast meadows and breathtaking mountain panoramas. The winding roads offer an exciting challenge as you drive higher into the mountains.
Later on your journey you will pass the Moglicë Hydropower Plant, an impressive feat of engineering. The hydroelectric power station generates electricity from the Devoll River. Construction of the plant began in 2013 and was completed in 2018. It is an important energy project in Albania and plays a crucial role in providing electricity to the country. The reservoir formed by the hydroelectric power station offers picturesque views and has transformed the area. The power plant and reservoir is a unique stop along the way to see how hydropower is used to generate sustainable energy.
Please note that some maps still show the old road, which is now inaccessible due to the reservoir that is now on that site. Make sure you follow the correct route. For that reason there is also a warning in the route to follow the main road!
After the adventurous unpaved sections you will be rewarded with a challenging ride to the end point near Korce. The original route ends at Hotel Casa Gaçe. This hotel is located in the hills just outside the city, so you can see the lights of Korce in the valley in the evening. Would you like absolute luxury with a slightly more spectacular view? Then you can continue on the same road and spend the night at Montrelux Resort, at an altitude of 1300 meters, just below the top of the mountain. From here it is just a short walk to the mountain top itself.
Of course you can also spend the night in the city, which is known for its rich history and vibrant culture. Explore the charming streets, enjoy delicious local dishes in one of the traditional restaurants and discover the warm hospitality of the locals.
This motorcycle route from Berat to Korce is a real treat for motorcyclists looking for adventure and beautiful landscapes. It offers a perfect balance between challenging unpaved stretches of road and beautiful winding roads past breathtaking sights. Be prepared and enjoy this unforgettable experience!
