04 Landhuizen en Kastelen tussen Olst Wijhe en Markelo

These country houses and castles have been used as a framework to plot the beautiful routes, but the routes remain worthwhile even without visiting the described objects. But of course the route has added value if you stop here and there and take a walk. Not all manors and castles are open to visitors, but these can be spotted from the public road or their garden or park is open to visitors.
The route is for the most part on country roads, the busier N-roads and urban areas are avoided as much as possible. The length of the routes has been kept below 175 km, partly because the average speed will not be that high on many 60 km roads.
Almost every province has one or more routes, only in South Holland and the Flevopolders no routes have been set out because there were no country houses and castles that were eligible for this tour due to their location.
Starting point: Castle Het Nijenhuis, Olst-Wijhe
End point: Cafe Restaurant de Viersprong, Hof van Twente

Huis Diepenheim
You start in Olst-Wijhe at Kasteel het Nijenhuis.
Het Nijenhuis Castle, 't Nijenhuis 10, 8131 RD Heino/Wijhe
Het Nijenhuis Castle is one of the best preserved manors in Overijssel. Located between the villages of Heino and Wijhe, it is surrounded by a beautiful landscape. The history of Het Nijenhuis Castle begins in the late Middle Ages. The first mention dates from 1382. The Castle is now a museum with a sculpture garden.
After 3 km on the way to Heino you will pass the second house.
Estate 't Rozendael, Rozendaelseweg 3, 8141 NC Heino
't Rozendael is privately owned and cannot be visited. In 1999 the country estate was designated as a national monument.
After a short 14 km, country house number three.
Den Berg, Heinoseweg 2, 7722 JP Dalfsen
(havezate) Den Berg was built in 1705 and in 1742 it was given a park of approximately 60 hectares. Unfortunately, the house and the park cannot be visited.
More than seven kilometers further, another estate, together with De Vilsterse Molen and the Sint Willibrorduskerk a beautiful piece of historic landscape.
Estate Vilsteren, Vilsterseweg 17, 7734 PD Vilsteren
The House and the Village of Vilsteren belong to the 1035 hectare estate Vilsteren BV, which has been owned by the Cremers family since 1850. The subsoil and a number of buildings, such as "Groot Spijker" and the outbuildings, are owned by this family. The inhabitants of the village pay rent. Houses and farms on the estate can be recognized by the dark green-light yellow shutters, the coat of arms of the Van Vilsteren family. The Cremers family also manages forest areas and an estate campsite. Kitty Verrips-Roukens wrote the book On gentlemen and farmers in 1982. A Sallands estate. This book is about the history of the village of Eeckeren (read: Vilsteren) between 1800 and 1977. The KRO made a documentary about the estate and the village in the late 1970s "The train does not stop in Vilsteren" that was still on the Dutch television has been repeated.
Five kilometers further at Ommen you will find Landgoed Het Laer on your path.
Estate Het Laer, Het Laar 2, 7731 AV Ommen
Around 1380 a manor Het Laer is mentioned in the medieval sources. This house, then no more than a farm, was demolished in the eighteenth century. A little further on, a new country house was built around 1700, which can still be admired. The white plastered house is located in a beautiful park with long sight axes. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Baron Van Pallandt, who lived on Eerde, bought the estate. Just like his house in Eerde, the baron Het Laer donated it to the Eastern philosopher Krishnamurti, who returned it after a few years. Now Het Laer is a location for weddings, events and business meetings.
We have not yet left the municipality of Ommen and the next one pops up.
Castle Eerde, Kasteellaan 1, 7731 PJ Ommen
Castle Eerde has a rich history. A fortified wooden house stood here in the 14th century. The resident was the infamous robber baron Evert van Essen. He robbed and looted in the area. The bishop of Utrecht thought that this could no longer be the case and had Evert's den of robbers burnt down in 1380 during a punitive expedition. The castle as you see it today was built in 1715 by order of Johan Werner, baron van Pallandt. The castle stands on the main axis of the estate, which used to run even hundreds of meters further than the provincial road. One of the projects in the context of Eerde 2020 is the restoration of this main axis. You can visit the castle during special excursions by Natuurmonumenten.
After 83 km on the route, just after the water mill, which is located on the Singraven estate, you come to the country house. The Singraven Mill is a water-powered mill with 3 undershot wheels on the Dinkel
Singraven House, Molendijk 37, 7591 PT Denekamp
The first House of Singraven dates from 1415. The name Singraven means "great moat". In 1651-1653 it was demolished and replaced by a new house to which a stair tower was added in 1661. In addition to the manor, the estate also includes the watermill of Singraven aan de Dinkel, a coach house and a number of leased farms.
After more than 135 km on the route, just below Goor you arrive at the next country house
Weldam Estate, Weldammerlaan 5, 7475 MJ Markelo
Weldam, located in the beautiful wooded area of south-west Twente in the municipality of Hof van Twente, is one of the larger estates in the eastern Netherlands. The centuries-old estate, with the castle and gardens as the center, consists of forests, fields, meadows, streams, characteristic avenues, monumental houses and farms. You can recognize from the shutters, painted in black and yellow, that one is dealing with a building of the estate.
At 145 km from the route we pass the last country house
House Diepenheim, Stedeke 4, 7478 RV Diepenheim
The house is first mentioned in 1177, when the former castle was destroyed. In 1180 a new house is built. It changed owners several times, until it was bought in 1925 by the De Vos van Steenwijk family. The house is still inhabited by the Baroness De Vos van Steenwijk.
After this country house you continue for a few kilometers and you arrive at the end point of the route, Café Restaurant de Viersprong.

The 10 most beautiful car and motorcycle routes in the Netherlands
These 10 routes in the Netherlands have been carefully selected, checked and made equal for TomTom, Garmin and MyRoute-app Navigation by a MyRoute-app RouteXpert. The 10 most beautiful motorcycle and car routes in the Netherlands are always a snapshot, and a personal opinion of the reviewer. This does not alter the fact that every lover of beautiful roads and interesting sights will enjoy these routes.
The ten routes are spread over 10 provinces, we only skipped Flevoland and South Holland. Interesting routes can also be found in the MyRoute app RouteXpert library, but we still want to stick to the 10 most beautiful and not the 12 most beautiful.
Enjoy the many fortresses and castles that are included in the routes, such as Fort Veldhuis in North Holland. But also take a look at the route southeast of Nijmegen and visit the impressive Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial. The route 'Overijssel in bird's eye view' includes the oldest house in the Netherlands and the route along the IJssel is probably the most beautiful piece of asphalt in the Netherlands.
This way there is something for everyone in this route collection. If you do not agree with these 10 routes, please send us an e-mail, indicate which route(s) should be removed and which route you would like to see instead. Maybe your route will be included in this collection of the 10 most beautiful routes in the Netherlands!
