I created this route based on the route description made by Bert Loorbach in the Motor Tour Guide Part 1 France, this is route 12 "from St.-Rémy to the Camargue".

This route is a beautiful ride from Provence via the Camargue to the Mediterranean coast in a beautiful setting. The roads are not spectacular, but they are beautiful with occasional beautiful panoramas.

RouteXpert Review
This route from the Motorcycle Tour Guide France part 1 takes us from Provence, via the Camargue to the Mediterranean

Bert Loorbach, the author, is an avid motorcyclist himself and lived in France for a year and a half. During that time, he dedicated himself to mapping France's lesser-known and beautiful back roads specifically for motorcyclists. Hotels, campsites, sights, parking lots, and restaurants are included as points of interest.

This route includes a number of cities where Vincent van Gogh stayed, along the route there are a number of POI that remind us of this.

We start in St Rémy, where Van Gogh stayed in an institution, and drive via the Alpilles to Les Baux-de-Provence, a characteristic Provençal village in the middle of the Alpilles with a special history and panoramic views over the landscape.

You can also visit the Cathédrale d'Images (Cathedral of Images) here. This permanent exhibition, established in 1976, projects large-format images onto the walls of immense stone chambers carved into the rocks of the Val d'Enfer (Valley of Hell).

We continue to Fontvieille via the scenic D33. Along the way, you can visit the Alphonse Daudet Windmill. It was in this mill that the author Alphonse Daudet wrote "Letters from My Windmill," a collection of short stories.

A little further on, in the heart of the landscape, stands the "Aqueduc Romain de Barbegal" aqueduct, definitely worth a stop. The Barbegal Aqueduct and Mill is a Roman watermill complex located in the municipality of Fontvieille and is described as "the largest known concentration of mechanical power in the ancient world."

Afterward, we'll take a scenic road to Arles, the home of Vincent van Gogh, which inspired many of his paintings. There are several museums, amphitheaters, and other historical sights worth visiting. We'll also take time to enjoy lunch at one of the many excellent restaurants or cafés.

We continue our journey south along the D35, following the Petit Rhône River. At Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, we cross the river on the Bac Barcarin ferry, which departs every half hour and is free. From October to March: 6:30 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM to 7:00 PM; from April to September: 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

We now enter the Camargue Regional Nature Park. This marshy area, formed by the Rhône Delta, is a unique national park. The Camargue is known for its white horses, cowboys, and flamingos. Riding a motorcycle here is a unique experience.

We'll drive around the large lake "Etang de Vaccarès" and visit the Pont de Gau Ornithological Park, a wonderful place to see all kinds of wild birds, especially flamingos. It's a wonderful experience to see these magnificent birds up close. The entrance fee is €8.

Our final destination is Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a beautiful coastal town. This charming fishing village on the Mediterranean Sea glistens in the sunlight, so beautifully that Vincent van Gogh captured its streets and the seascape on canvas. Known for its expansive, wild sandy beach, the village is a popular spot for lovers of nature and solitude. There are several hotels and a few campsites where you can stay overnight.
