Les Calanques
Bert Loorbach, the writer, is an enthusiastic motorcyclist himself and lived in France for a year and a half. During that time he devoted himself to mapping the unknown and beautiful roads of France especially for motorcyclists.
Hotels, campsites, places of interest, parking spaces and restaurants are listed as POIs.
We leave from Martigues and drive through Les Calanques, a National Park in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône. The park is a succession of rough limestone rocks along the Côte d'Azur with steep rock walls, small sheltered beaches and water with a beautiful turquoise color. They are paradise images.
The park covers a stretch of about 20 kilometers in length and 4 kilometers in width along the south coast between Marseille and Cassis. Calanque Sormiou, Morgiou, d'En-Vau, Port-Pin and Sugiton are the names of places along this route. Our first stop is in Calanque Sormiou (RP8), the largest and best-known calanque near Marseille is also one of the few inhabited calanques: around the small sandy beach are several fisherman's houses and 2 restaurants. A hiking trail with breathtaking views runs above the cliffs and to the left of the Calanque de Sormieu lies the sea cave of Cosquer with prehistoric murals.
The other Calanques are more difficult to reach but for fans it is definitely worth stopping and taking the walk to enjoy the truly beautiful panoramas. The water of the Côte d'Azur does not become bluer than in these famous creeks! The high white cliffs also offer the most impressive views of the sea. All Calanques are included as POI.
We drive back a bit and then continue the ride via the beautiful Col de la Gineste (RP9), a beautiful road through a beautiful area. There are several parking places to stop for a photo and possibly a short walk (climb) for an even better view.
We continue along the coast via Cassis to Le Ciotat, again beautiful panoramas. In Le Ciotat (RP16) we will stop for lunch and possibly a nice swim in the blaue sea on one of the beautiful beaches. The ride continues along the coast with a beautiful view of the Mediterranean Sea to the Fôret de Six Fours (RP23) a beautiful forest where we drive on a narrow winding road to Toulon (RP25). Just outside the city of Toulon is Mont Faron, a mountain overlooking the city and the Toulon roadstead. At the highest point, at RP26 (584m high), a memorial is dedicated to the Allied landings in 1944 in Provence and to the liberation of Toulon. The way to and from the top are narrow but delightful steering roads with the beautiful hairpin bends.
The original route ends in Toulon, there are a number of hotels in the center and campsites just outside the city. I adjusted it and we drive on to the town of Cogolin.
The route continues along the Côte d'Azure and at RP33 you have the choice to continue along the coast by turning right or continue through the mountains by turning left at the next roundabout.
Both options can be seen on the photo of the track. The end point of the ride is Cogolin near St. Tropez, where we will spend the night at one of the campsites in Grimaud or Cogolin.
Cogolin is also the starting point for the next route in this series.
This route with its beautiful winding roads through a beautiful landscape is certainly worth 4 stars.
