Beautiful roads and panaroma's in Vercors
Bert Loorbach, the writer, is an enthusiastic motorcyclist himself and lived in France for a year and a half. During that time he devoted himself to mapping the unknown and beautiful roads of France especially for motorcyclists.
Hotels, campsites, places of interest, parking spaces and restaurants are included as POI.
This route is a must for every motorcyclist and leads through the rugged Vercors, a promontory of the Alps with mountain tops above 2000 meters. We drive past, through and under rocks. There are large differences in height and beautiful panoramas. Very beautiful in the early and late season. It is very busy here in high season. Along the route there are also several interesting side roads.
The first part of the route to St. Jean-en-Vercors leads over the D76 through a beautiful hilly landscape. After St. Jean the serious work starts and we drive over the Combe Laval and Col de la Machine which have been cut out of rocks. After the Col de la Machine we take the D2 to St. Laurent-en-Royans.
After this we drive route (start RP9) through the tunnels of Petits et Grands Goulets, a beautiful winding road with many tunnels cut from stone and overhanging rock formations. Beware in the tunnels it is damp.
The route remains beautiful until RP12 Villard-de-Lans where we stop for lunch on one of the many terraces and restaurants. After lunch we drive on a beautiful, but occasionally narrow, road towards Balme-de-Rencurel. At RP14 we deviate from the original route and turn right to drive the Col de Romeyère to St. Gervais. A beautiful winding road with beautiful views.
From St Gervais we take the Grenoble route to just before Beauvoir-en-Royans where we turn left and continue on the D31 with its delightful hairpin bends to Pont-en-Royans, where we take a break for the "hanging" houses (RP20 ) on view.
After Pont-en-Royans, the ride goes back to St. Nazaire in an increasingly rolling landscape,
I rate this route with 4 stars, because of the beautiful roads and panoramas, the tunnels carved from the rocks are really beautiful. If you have the time, drive the Col de La Machine up and down once.
